#SIMMERPOTSUNDAY

2 grapefruit

2 limes

2 lemons

4 bay leaves

Fill a pot of water with all your fruit and let it simmer. Add water throughout the day. Adds moisture to the air if you live in a dry climate like me and then you can dump it down the garbage disposal once you’re done to keep that from smelling.

It's such a simple yet effective trick, and I'm so excited to share more about why I love my #SIMMERPOTSUNDAY routine and how you can make it even better! Beyond just the incredible aroma, boiling citrus peels in a pot offers so many benefits. For me, it's about creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. The gentle steam releases the essential oils from the citrus, which can be surprisingly uplifting. On a chilly or gloomy day, the scent of fresh lemons, limes, and grapefruit makes my space feel brighter and cleaner. It’s like a little aromatherapy session simmering right on my stove! One of the questions I often get is about variations. While my basic recipe with grapefruit, limes, lemons, and bay leaves is fantastic, the beauty of a simmer pot is how customizable it is! For a cozier, autumnal vibe, I love adding a few cinnamon sticks, a handful of cloves, and even a splash of vanilla extract. During the holidays, I might throw in some fresh cranberries and pine sprigs for a festive scent. If you're looking for something more herbaceous, a few sprigs of rosemary or mint can really elevate the fragrance. Just remember, the citrus peels are your base, and you can build from there! Another practical aspect is how long you can keep it going. I usually let my simmer pot go for a few hours, refilling the water as needed to prevent it from boiling dry. It's important to never leave it unattended, especially if you have pets or small children. Once the scent starts to fade, which is usually after 2-3 hours depending on the intensity of your heat, you can simply strain out the ingredients and refresh the pot with new ones. Sometimes, I'll let the original ingredients steep a bit longer off the heat, or even store them in the fridge overnight to get one more use out of them the next day. It’s all about getting the most out of your natural ingredients. And let's not forget the eco-friendly aspect! Instead of throwing away citrus peels after juicing or eating the fruit, you're giving them a second life. It's a wonderful way to reduce waste and save money on expensive air fresheners. Plus, as I mentioned, it truly works wonders for brightening up a stale garbage disposal. Just pour the cooled liquid down the drain, and you’ll notice a significant difference. It's these little tricks that make home life so much more enjoyable and sustainable. If you haven't tried a simmer pot yet, I highly recommend starting this #SIMMERPOTSUNDAY tradition!
