There were many posts online recently regarding this performance + meal experience and i finally got to try it out in Shanghai! (Nezha theme)
My seats weren’t at the front front and we didn’t opt for the dressing up (too lazy to change and put on makeup as it was during winter and there were many layers to take off), so the price was around $50+ per pax (purchased from Klook)
The food was not bad, but not the best.. but it was a good experience considering that there was a live performance as well as some projection onto the plates which made it interesting!
It was a good way to introduce Shanghai food to those who haven’t travelled there but in smaller portions? But then again, to experience the real Shanghai food heaven, it’s better to explore the streets (crab roe noodles/xlb!!)
Maybe i should’ve dressed up.. but i rather be comfortable haha but it’s up to each person’s preference!
One time is enough for me:)

The Nezha theme really adds a magical vibe to the evening, especially with the creative live shows and the way food presentation is enhanced by projections directly onto the plates. While I skipped dressing up for comfort's sake, many guests choose to wear themed attire to fully embrace the atmosphere — it’s a fun option if you want to get more involved.
The food includes items like bing tanghulu, steamed fish with light soy sauce, abalone rice, and braised beef with youtiao that highlight local flavors, though portions are intentionally small to focus on tasting variety rather than filling up. Personally, I recommend going with an appetite to sample the delicacies and enjoy how the dishes are paired with the performances.
For anyone serious about Shanghai cuisine, complementing this experience with street food adventures—especially trying classic crab roe noodles or xiaolongbao—is a must. The restaurant provides a neat preview but the bustling food streets offer authentic largescale tastings.
Keep in mind that purchasing tickets through platforms like Klook might save you money, with prices around $50+ per person depending on your seating and whether you opt for dressing up. Winter visitors might want to consider comfort versus costume given the layers needed. Overall, Xuyan is a great blend of culture, performance, and dining, and makes for a memorable night out in Shanghai.
