Keep track of your energy!! - Energy Calendar

Our time is finite. Choosing the pursuits that deliver the greatest returns on that time is crucial. Yet, we mindlessly engage in activities that do not truly make good use of our time.

The Energy Calendar helps us to keep track of our energy levels across our daily activities, so that we can spend our time in the most meaningful way.

- HOW ARE YOU SPENDING YOUR TIME? -

To start, be aware of which activities are energy-creating, neutral, or energy-draining.

- Energy-creating: Leaves you feeling motivated and eager to do more.

- Neutral: Leaves you feeling unaffected.

- Energy-draining: Leaves you feeling uninspired and reluctant to do anything.

- HOW DO YOU WANT TO SPEND YOUR TIME? -

With your new-found knowledge, you can direct more of your attention to energy creators.

Delegate your neutral tasks to someone else who can do a better job at them.

Eliminate or minimise your focus on energy drainers.

The goal is simply to increase the time spent on whatever makes you excited and enthusiastic.

... Read moreThe Energy Calendar isn’t just about marking activities; it’s a powerful tool for self-awareness and time management. From my experience, starting this practice means being honest about how each task truly makes you feel rather than rushing through your day on autopilot. One tip that helped me was to color-code my calendar daily: green for energy-creating, yellow for neutral, and red for energy-draining activities. By the end of the week, zooming out gave me clear patterns showing where to cut back or delegate. Initially, it was surprising how much time was spent on red or neutral tasks that neither fueled me nor added significant value. Another valuable insight is learning to delegate effectively. Neutral tasks, which are necessary but don’t bring much energy, can often be outsourced or delegated to save your most productive hours. I started hiring experts for some of these chores, which freed up time and mental space. Adjustments to energy-draining activities are also vital. Sometimes tweaking the approach to a task can shift it from draining to neutral or even energizing. Reflecting on why you perform certain tasks — is it habit or necessity? — can reveal opportunities to eliminate unnecessary activities. In busy, cluttered calendars, this method brings clarity and helps prioritize what really matters to your energy and goals. It's about gradually increasing your energy-creating moments while managing or minimizing energy drainers. This approach has improved how I allocate my time, making my weekdays more meaningful and productive.
