When I've commissioned character art or fantasy scenes, I've found it incredibly helpful to create a detailed brief. This includes: Reference Images: Gather pictures that inspire you – colors, styles, poses, aesthetic. Even if it's not exactly what you want, it helps the artist understand your taste. For example, if you want a 'cool' vibe, show them what 'cool' means to *you*, because remember, 'cool is subjective'. Detailed Descriptions: Describe your concept in words. What's the mood? What story do you want to tell? What elements are absolutely essential? If it's a character, what are their defining traits, their outfit, their expression? Color Palettes: Provide examples of colors you like or dislike. Hex codes can be helpful if you have specific brand colors or a precise aesthetic in mind. Style Preferences: Do you prefer a realistic, painterly, cartoon, or anime style? Point to examples from the artist's own portfolio or other artists whose work you admire (but clarify you're not asking them to copy). Having all these details up front minimizes misunderstandings and ensures the artist has a solid foundation to work from. It sets clear expectations for both parties, which is vital for a smooth process. Embracing the Unknown: Trusting the Artist On the other hand, if you're not sure what you want, or you simply love an artist's style and want them to create something unique, then give them full creative control. This requires a different kind of trust. I've done this for abstract pieces where I just wanted something beautiful in their signature style. In these cases, provide minimal guidance – maybe a preferred color scheme or a general theme – and then step back. Understand that the outcome might be a delightful surprise that you hadn't specifically imagined, and that's the beauty of it. The Importance of Communication Throughout Regardless of which approach you take, ongoing communication is paramount. From the initial brief to the final artwork, maintain open dialogue. Most artists will offer sketch phases or work-in-progress updates. This is your opportunity to provide constructive feedback. Be polite, clear, and specific. If you wait until the very end to say, "This isn't what I imagined," it's often too late for major changes without incurring additional costs or causing frustration.
