these crazy dogs of my daughters only eat there food if someones in the house with them

do your dogs do this?

... Read moreIt's such a common and often puzzling behavior, isn't it? Like the original post mentioned, 'my daughters dogs, eat only if you're there with them lol.' Many of us dog parents have experienced this unique mealtime quirk: our furry friends refusing to touch their food unless we're right there, or even waiting until we get home to finally dig in. It makes you wonder, 'Why does my dog only eat when I'm home?' or 'Why does my dog wait to eat until I get home?' It turns out there are a few fascinating reasons behind this, and understanding them can actually help strengthen your bond and ensure your pup is healthy and happy. One of the biggest factors is often security and comfort. Dogs are pack animals, and in the wild, eating alone can leave them vulnerable. Having you present provides a sense of safety, assuring them that no threats are lurking and their meal won't be snatched away. This is especially true for dogs who might have a nervous disposition or a history of resource guarding. Your presence signals that mealtime is safe and secure. Another common reason links back to social eating and routine. Just like humans, many dogs enjoy sharing experiences, and eating can be a social event. If you've always been present during their meals, they might have simply learned to associate your presence with food. It becomes part of their established routine. Some dogs might even see it as a way to get your attention! If they've learned that waiting for you ensures you'll sit with them or talk to them while they eat, they'll continue that behavior. Sometimes, it could also be a subtle sign of anxiety or stress when left alone. If their appetite decreases when you're not around, it might be a mild form of separation anxiety. They might be too preoccupied with your absence to focus on eating. On the flip side, some dogs simply aren't as stimulated to eat when alone; your return might bring a burst of energy and an activated appetite. So, what can you do if your dog is exhibiting this behavior? First, if your dog is otherwise healthy, eating enough, and maintaining a good weight, it might just be a charming quirk! However, if you're concerned about them skipping meals or losing weight, there are a few things you can try. Establishing a consistent feeding schedule is key. Offer food at the same time every day, and give them about 15-20 minutes to eat. If they don't, take the food away until the next mealtime. This teaches them that food is available at specific times, regardless of your immediate presence. Creating a calm and quiet eating space can also help. Ensure their bowl is in a low-traffic area where they feel secure. If anxiety seems to be a factor, try leaving a radio or TV on softly when you leave, or even a piece of clothing with your scent. For dogs that truly need your presence, you can try a gradual desensitization approach: sit close by while they eat, then slowly increase the distance over several days or weeks, eventually moving out of the room. Always remember to make mealtime a positive experience, rewarding them for eating independently if that's your goal. And, as always, if you have significant concerns about your dog's eating habits or overall health, a chat with your veterinarian is always the best first step!
