As someone who actively follows and supports the work of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), I find their recent official statement particularly important for all Nepalis living abroad. The letter from the NRNA National Coordination Council in the USA addresses an objectionable statement made by Honorable Ram Kumari, a member of Nepal’s National Assembly, which the NRNA considers to be a misrepresentation of the Nepali diaspora’s contributions. From my experience, organizations like the NRNA play a crucial role in connecting Nepalis globally, advocating for their rights, and supporting Nepal's development. The NRNA’s response underscores their ongoing efforts to protect the interests and identity of Nepalis worldwide. They emphasize unity among the diaspora and reiterate their dedication to Nepal’s prosperity through remittances, investment, and cultural preservation. What stood out to me in their response was the call for respect and responsible public discourse. This reminds me of how diaspora communities often face misunderstandings or unfair critiques from public figures. By publicly addressing such statements, the NRNA fosters accountability and encourages respectful dialogue both within Nepal and abroad. Additionally, the mention of legal and policy gaps affecting Nepali citizens reinforces ongoing challenges the diaspora experiences concerning citizenship and voting rights. From personal conversations with fellow Nepalis, navigating these issues can be complex, but organizations like NRNA provide vital support and advocacy. Overall, the NRNA’s proactive communication highlights their leadership and dedication. For non-resident Nepalis, staying informed about such statements and responses helps in fostering a strong collective identity and voice. It’s encouraging to see an organized effort to uplift all Nepalis regardless of where they reside, reinforcing the message: ‘‘once a Nepali, always a Nepali.’’
