My hair tools collection ✨

Navigating 3a curls is a journey, and getting a good air-dry without losing all the volume at my crown is my ultimate hair type challenge! 🌀 Finding the right tools makes all the difference, so I decided to go through my stash and rate all my brushes to see what really works for our curl pattern.

Here is the final verdict:

🏆 Pink Conair Detangler (10/10): The absolute holy grail! It detangles, styles, sections, and lets the hair breathe. It can do it all!

✨ Conair Round Brush (7/10): Perfect for when I want to switch it up and go for a blowout look.

✨ Goody Bristle Brush (7/10): Super gentle on the hair and great for basic detangling.

✈️ Wide Tooth Comb (5/10): Just okay. I mostly keep this around because it’s easy to travel with!

🤷‍♀️ Red Styling Brush (4/10): Good for longer hair, or if you only want the bottom of the hair to be curly.

💧 Flexible Wet Brush (4/10): A solid wet brush, but definitely better suited for thicker, tighter curls than my 3a pattern.

... Read moreHaving struggled with 3a curls myself, I know how tricky it can be to keep them voluminous and frizz-free, especially when air-drying. The Pink Conair Detangler really stands out because it combines multiple functions—detangling, sectioning, and styling—without pulling or breaking my delicate curls. Its ability to let hair breathe also helps maintain natural bounce. In my experience, round brushes like the Conair Round Brush are excellent for achieving a smooth blowout with some volume on the crown, but they require careful use to avoid heat damage. For regular detangling days, I prefer softer bristle brushes like the Goody Bristle Brush because they are gentle and reduce hair breakage. I also keep a wide tooth comb handy for travel purposes since it’s portable, but I rarely use it for everyday styling because it tends to reduce volume. Some brushes, like the flexible wet brush, are better suited for tighter curls (3b or 3c) rather than 3a patterns, as I’ve noticed it doesn’t glide through my looser curls as smoothly. One tip I can share from personal experience is to always start detangling from the tips and slowly work upward to the roots when your hair is wet and conditioned. This minimizes breakage and preserves volume. Different hair tools can create very different results depending on your specific curl pattern, so don't hesitate to experiment with your brush collection.
