... Read moreAfter seeing how amazing my 90s birthday photoshoot turned out with such a simple setup, I just had to share more tips on how YOU can recreate that iconic retro vibe without breaking the bank or needing a fancy studio! It truly amazed me that these professional-looking shots came from a home studio with just some white backing paper, proving you don't need much to capture that perfect 90s aesthetic.
First off, nailing the 90s look is all about the fashion. Think basics: high-waisted, light-wash jeans are a must, just like the ones I wore! Pair them with a classic white ribbed tank top or a simple graphic tee. Oversized denim jackets, flannel shirts tied around the waist, and chunky sneakers or combat boots really seal the deal. Don't forget accessories like chokers, scrunchies, or even a backward baseball cap for that effortlessly cool, 'straight outta a Levi's or JC Penney ad' feel. For hair, short, dark hair like mine works great, or you could go for space buns, crimped waves, or a sleek, straight look with a middle part.
Now, for the 'studio' part. As I mentioned, a simple white backdrop was all we needed. You can easily create this at home using a large white sheet, a roll of white seamless paper from an art supply store, or even a blank white wall. Lighting is key! Natural light from a large window works wonders, or you can use a simple ring light or softbox if you have one. The trick is to keep it clean and minimal to really let the 90s fashion shine, reminiscent of those classic campaigns.
Posing is where you really bring the attitude. Think relaxed, confident, and a little bit moody, but always authentic. Sitting positions, like those in my photos where I'm on a white backdrop with knees bent or looking away thoughtfully, are perfect. Try leaning against a wall, squatting, or even just sitting casually on the floor. Focus on expressions that are cool and understated – less big smiles, more smirks or contemplative gazes. Crossing your arms, looking over your shoulder, or a direct, confident gaze at the camera, just like I did, are all classic 90s moves. Don't be afraid to close your eyes for a moment to get that relaxed, 'in the moment' capture.
For my fellow Black creators, embracing the 90s aesthetic can feel incredibly empowering. We can infuse our unique style into these looks, from natural hair styles like braids, twists, or afros, to incorporating vibrant makeup trends of the era. Think brown lip liner with gloss, or bold eyeshadows. Don't shy away from adding culturally relevant accessories that speak to your personal 90s experience. This shoot was my way of celebrating my birthday with an ode to a truly iconic decade, and I hope it inspires other black girl creators to try their own 90s inspired photoshoot, showcasing their beauty and creativity!
So, if you're looking for fantastic 90s birthday photoshoot ideas or just want to capture that nostalgic aesthetic, remember it's all about creativity, simple props, and authentic styling. Give it a try, and you might just surprise yourself with the amazing results!
Gorgeous!!
