My Golden Doodle

Oh, the joys (and challenges!) of owning a Goldendoodle puppy! If your furry friend is anything like my Snooping, you know that 'teething phase' isn't just a phase, it's an *adventure*! I remember when Snooping first started showing signs – everything became a potential chew toy, from my favorite slippers to the legs of our coffee table. It's totally normal, though, as their puppy teeth fall out and their adult teeth come in, usually between 3 to 6 months of age. You might notice extra drooling, a bit of discomfort, and, yes, that insatiable urge to chew! One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was the importance of having appropriate chew toys readily available. It's not just about saving your belongings; it's also about providing relief for their sore gums and teaching them what's okay to chew. I’ve tried a bunch, and finding durable, puppy-safe options has been key. For Snooping, the #spotbambone I found on #Amazon, mentioned in my original post, has been an absolute lifesaver. It’s tough enough to withstand his determined chewing but safe for his developing teeth. When choosing chew toys for your Goldendoodle, whether standard or a mini like some friends of mine have, always consider safety. Look for toys that are: Appropriately Sized: Too small and they can be a choking hazard; too large and they might not be able to get a good grip. Durable: Goldendoodles are strong chewers! Look for materials designed for aggressive chewers. Non-Toxic: Make sure the materials are safe for ingestion, even in small amounts. Varied Textures: Different textures can provide different kinds of gum relief, which is great for teething pups. Sometimes a soft rope toy is perfect, other times a hard rubber one. Beyond just providing toys, managing chewing behavior involves a bit of training and redirection. Whenever Snooping would start to chew on something he shouldn't, I’d gently but firmly say "no," take the inappropriate item away, and immediately offer him one of his approved chew toys. When he started gnawing on that, I'd give him lots of praise! Consistency is everything here. Frozen carrots or specialized puppy teething rings (you can often freeze them!) can also offer extra relief for those sore gums. As they grow out of puppyhood, their dental health remains super important. Goldendoodles, whether standard or mini, can be prone to dental issues just like any other breed if not cared for. Brushing their teeth regularly (yes, it’s a thing!), providing dental chews, and regular vet check-ups are essential. I started getting Snooping used to having his mouth handled early on, which made brushing a bit easier. While finding the perfect puppy chew toy was my immediate concern, I also think about the bigger picture. Goldendoodles are wonderful, intelligent, and energetic dogs. Their need to chew often stems from their natural instincts, boredom, or anxiety. Providing plenty of exercise and mental stimulation can also reduce unwanted chewing. While puppies are adorable, there are many lovely Goldendoodles and Doodle mixes of all ages in shelters and rescues (even in places like 'Tierheim' in Germany, which means animal shelter!) who are desperately waiting for their forever homes.
