How to self-edit on a budget
Getting an editor is not financially feasible for all of us writers. Try to get as many eyes as you can on your manuscript. Your own eyes or eyes of family are not enough.
1. Get Alpha readers for your first draft (paid or not)
2. Listen to your Manuscript on speechify or other platform (don’t make any edits. Just listen!)
3. Office Max/depot print out your manuscript (spiral bound)
4. Read your spiral bound manuscript and self edit and utilize applicable Alpha reader suggestions (paid or not)
4. Get Beta Readers for your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th+ draft
5. Read your manuscript again on a tablet and self edit and utilize applicable Beta reader suggestions (repeat a few times - change how you read it - paper, document, ipad format, speechify)
5. Get a proof reader for 5th draft (fiverr) + Beta’s
6. Make sure you reread for typos, extra words, etc.
I can go into more depth on how to find Alphas, Betas or what those are. I can also get into specifics of how to self-edit. Happy to expand :) Lemme know of any questions. #editing #bookediting #writer #writing #writingabook
Editing your manuscript can be a daunting task, especially when hiring a professional isn't feasible. Fortunately, self-editing is an attainable skill that any writer can master. One effective method is to start with Alpha readers, who can provide initial feedback on your first draft, regardless of whether they are paid. Beyond gathering opinions from friends and family, consider utilizing tools like Speechify to listen to your manuscript, which offers a fresh perspective. Printing your manuscript in a spiral bound format from Office Max or a similar service can significantly aid in the editing process. The tactile experience of reading physical pages can help you catch errors that might slip past on a screen. Moreover, rotating your review method—by reading on different devices like tablets or printed copies—can give new insights with each pass. After incorporating feedback from both Alpha and later Beta readers, run through the manuscript again, paying close attention to common mistakes such as typos and unnecessary filler words. Hiring a proofreader from platforms like Fiverr for your final draft can also ensure that your manuscript is polished and ready for submission. Remember, self-editing is an iterative process—your commitment to continually revising will help you produce your best work!
