ardilla enana amazónica (Microsciurus flaviventer) es una de las ardillas más pequeñas del mundo, del tamaño de un chipmunk o una ardilla listada.
Características físicas principales
• Tamaño: Longitud total del cuerpo (cabeza + cuerpo) de 12 a 16 cm, cola de 8 a 16 cm (generalmente más corta que el cuerpo). Peso adulto: 86-132 g (machos un poco más grandes).
Pelaje: Dorso marrón oscuro o rojizo-oliváceo, finamente moteado. Vientre grisáceo lavado de naranja o amarillo pálido (más intenso en el pecho). Cola delgada, ahusada hacia la punta, con bandas débiles amarillentas Vive en los bosques húmedos tropicales de la Amazonía occidental (Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Brasil occidental), hasta unos 2.000 m de altitud. Se mueve por todos los niveles del bosque (suelo, sotobosque, árboles altos), pero es más común en el sotobosque y ramas bajas. Es arborícola, ágil y elusiva, alimentándose principalmente de frutos, semillas, hongos e insectos.
Having spent some time observing wildlife in the Amazon rainforest, I found the Microsciurus flaviventer incredibly intriguing due to its diminutive size and agility. These tiny squirrels rarely exceed 16 cm in body length, with some individuals sporting a slightly shorter tail, making them easy to overlook in the dense forest undergrowth. One aspect that fascinates me is their adaptation to a multi-level forest environment. Unlike many rodents restricted to ground or canopy levels, the Amazonian dwarf squirrel thrives from the forest floor to the middle and lower tree branches. This behavior likely helps them exploit diverse food sources—fruits, seeds, fungi, and insects—that are scattered across these layers. In my experience trekking through the humid tropical forests across Colombia and Peru, spotting these squirrels requires patience because of their elusive and quick movements. Their mottled brown and reddish-olive fur camouflages surprisingly well against the forest’s leafy background, which helps protect them from predators. Their diet is another point of interest. Unlike some squirrels that primarily hoard nuts, Microsciurus flaviventer's intake includes fungi and insects, reflecting the richness of Amazonian biodiversity. This omnivorous diet suggests they play a varied role in the ecosystem, contributing to seed dispersal and controlling insect populations. For wildlife enthusiasts or researchers visiting Amazonian regions up to 2,000 meters altitude, keeping an eye out for these arboreal creatures can offer rewarding insights into the subtle complexities of rainforest life.
