... Read moreTraveling to China for the first time can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience given the vastness and diversity of the country. From my own trips and experiences along with recommendations from locals and seasoned travelers, here’s some additional insight to help first-timers make the most out of these nine featured cities. Starting with Chongqing, while it’s known for its spicy food and bold urban vibe blending old and new, be prepared for its challenging flavors—many dishes are hot and oily, so if you aren’t used to spicy food, try to request milder versions or sample signature dishes in smaller portions. Its rapid rail connections to Chengdu make it easy to combine these two cities for a fuller experience. Chengdu is more laid-back and perfect for those who appreciate relaxed city life and enjoying world-famous Sichuan cuisine which suits Thai and Southeast Asian palates well. Don’t miss visiting the giant panda sanctuaries! The best travel window here is during winter months (December to February) if you enjoy snow and skiing. Shanghai stands out for its convenience, modern infrastructure, and expat-friendly atmosphere. Even if your Chinese language skills are minimal, digital services and English signage make navigation straightforward. Allocate at least four days to cover main city highlights and shopping areas; if you want to visit Disneyland, add extra time. Beijing offers a deep dive into Chinese history and culture with its ancient landmarks like the Forbidden City and Great Wall. The city is large and transit times can add up, so plan accordingly for a full exploration over a week. Learning a few basic Chinese phrases can unlock unique dining experiences at traditional eateries with special menus. For a slower pace, Xiamen is a sunshine-filled coastal city with beautiful beaches, photogenic spots, and delicious tropical fruits like fresh coconut and sweet watermelon. It’s perfect for a two-day chill getaway. Xi’an provides a fascinating glimpse into China’s ancient civilization with attractions like the Terracotta Warriors. The local cuisine tends to be richer and greasier so bring your appetite! Qingdao, famed for its European architecture and scenic views, pairs well with nearby seaside cities. Although prices are slightly higher, the quality of food and coffee shops makes it worthwhile. If you’re an adventure seeker, Harbin in winter transforms into a vibrant snow and ski destination with chilly temperatures reaching -30°C. Sampling local warm delicacies here will surely delight you. Finally, Anhui is a haven for nature lovers, offering dramatic landscapes resembling scenes from Chinese period dramas. Fresh hand-pulled noodles served at street stalls provide an authentic culinary treat. When planning your itinerary, consider transportation options such as high-speed trains connecting these cities and look into regional weather patterns to pack accordingly. Most importantly, openness to new experiences and trying local food enhance the enjoyment of your journey in China.
