So, you might have seen my quick post about whipping up a garlic tincture, but I wanted to dive a little deeper into why I swear by it, especially when I feel a sniffle coming on. It’s more than just a kitchen ingredient; garlic has been used for centuries as a potent herbal medicine, and making it into a tincture really helps to harness its full potential for your body to 'Heal Your Body'. Garlic isn't just for cooking; it's a powerhouse! I've read so much about its incredible properties – think anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial. It's like a natural bodyguard for your immune system, helping your body fight off those seasonal bugs and stay resilient. When I started researching natural remedies for cold and flu relief, garlic kept popping up for everything from common colds and congestion relief to general wellness. It's truly amazing what nature provides! Many of you might wonder why a tincture specifically, instead of just eating raw garlic or taking capsules. While eating raw garlic is fantastic (and I do that too!), a tincture really concentrates those beneficial compounds. Plus, the alcohol acts as a powerful solvent and preservative, helping to extract a broader spectrum of garlic's active ingredients and making it super potent. I find it much easier to take consistently than chewing raw cloves, especially when I'm already feeling under the weather. And for anyone curious about other forms like aged garlic extract or garlic oil capsules – those are great too, offering unique benefits, but for acute cold and flu support, I personally lean towards the fresh garlic tincture for its direct potency. Just a quick recap on making it, with a few more tips: I typically roughly chop about 1 cup of fresh, organic garlic cloves – the fresher, the better for potency! I put them into a clean, sterilized glass jar and then cover them completely with a high-proof alcohol, like vodka or grain alcohol (at least 80 proof, or 40% alcohol by volume). Make sure the garlic is fully submerged to prevent mold. Seal it up tight and keep it in a cool, dark cupboard. The waiting is the hardest part – 6-8 weeks, sometimes even longer if I forget about it! But trust me, it's worth the patience. Once it's ready, I strain out the garlic solids using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer, and then bottle the liquid into dark glass dropper bottles. Stored properly in a cool, dark place, it can last for years. So, how do I actually use it? When I feel a cold coming on, or just want a daily immune boost, I'll take about 1 full dropper (around 30 drops or 1ml) once or twice a day. I usually add it to a small glass of water or juice to mask the strong garlic taste – it can be quite potent! For a more intense immune push during an active cold, I might take it up to three times a day, but I always listen to my body and adjust. It’s definitely not a substitute for professional medical advice, and I always remind myself (and you!) to check with a healthcare professional, especially if you're on blood thinners, pregnant, or have other underlying health conditions. But for me, it's a powerful staple in my natural wellness toolkit. Since I started using this, I feel like my body handles seasonal changes much better. I've noticed my colds are shorter, and sometimes I even manage to ward them off completely.
