Today is Denim Day

Denim Day has become a powerful symbol for raising awareness about sexual violence and showing support for survivors. Originating from a 1998 Italian Supreme Court case where a rape conviction was overturned based on the victim’s jeans, the event challenges misconceptions about consent and victim-blaming. Wearing denim is a visible and impactful way to demonstrate solidarity and spark conversations. From my experience participating in Denim Day events, I’ve noticed how the simple act of wearing jeans can foster a supportive community atmosphere. Local organizations often host informative sessions and social media campaigns to educate the public about prevention and resources available to survivors. In Chicago, for example, Resilience offers online events and activities to engage individuals virtually. Getting involved is straightforward: wear your favorite jeans on April 29, share your support on social media using relevant hashtags, and encourage friends and family to join. Beyond the day itself, Denim Day promotes ongoing dialogue about consent, respect, and justice. By embracing this day, we not only honor survivors but also contribute to breaking the stigma and myths surrounding sexual violence.
