Filipino Titanic
Like many of you, I’ve been utterly captivated by the story of the RMS Titanic. The grandeur, the tragic loss, and the countless human stories — it’s a narrative that continues to resonate across generations. But as a Filipino, a specific question has always lingered in my mind: “Was there truly a Filipino on the Titanic?” This question sparked my own little research journey, and what I discovered truly surprised and moved me. The answer, I'm incredibly proud to share, is yes! His name was Frank Borja, a Manobo man hailing from Mindanao in the Philippines. It’s an incredible, often-overlooked piece of history that connects our islands to one of the most famous maritime tragedies. Frank wasn't a first-class passenger; instead, he was a vital part of the ship’s crew, working as a fireman or stoker in the scorching boiler rooms of the TITANIC. Can you imagine the immense journey he must have undertaken, leaving his home in the Philippines, traveling across continents, likely through bustling European ports, only to find himself aboard the magnificent, yet ill-fated, 'unsinkable' ship on its maiden voyage? His story represents the spirit of adventure and the global reach of labor even in those times. His work in the engine room would have been relentlessly demanding – shoveling tons of coal day and night to keep the mighty engines running at full steam. When the colossal ship struck the iceberg, I can only begin to fathom the sheer terror and chaos that would have erupted in those lower decks. The desperate need to rescue lives would have been paramount, but for those deep within the ship's bowels, escape would have been incredibly difficult. The chilling waters of the Atlantic awaited, and many, I imagine, would have had to jump into the freezing depths, hoping for any glimmer of help to arrive. The primal struggle for life must have consumed every fiber of their being. It makes you want to search for every detail of their experience, to fully grasp the enormity of what they endured. Miraculously, Frank Borja was one of the survivors. He was among those rescued by the RMS Carpathia, the heroic vessel that swiftly responded to the Titanic's distress calls. To think of the overwhelming relief, the profound feeling of being alive again after such an unimaginable ordeal, is truly moving. His survival story, though a mere footnote in some historical accounts, is a powerful testament to human resilience and adds a unique Filipino thread to the global tapestry of the Titanic's tragedy. It serves as a poignant reminder that the Titanic’s passenger and crew manifest was a true microcosm of the world, composed of individuals from diverse backgrounds and corners of the globe, each carrying their own hopes, dreams, and life stories. Learning about Frank Borja isn't just about uncovering a historical fact; it’s about recognizing the often-invisible contributions and experiences of people like him. It makes me reflect on the unsung heroes and the far-reaching impact of such pivotal historical events. His story, brief as it may be in official records, enriches the legendary TITANIC saga, proving that even in the most extensively documented historical moments, there are always more personal narratives waiting to be shared and appreciated. It fills me with a sense of pride and connection to consider his strength and spirit amidst such an epic disaster.
