Driving the Road to Hana? Don’t Miss These 5 stops

If you’re visiting Maui, taking the Road to Hana is a must! This winding coastal drive is full of waterfalls, lush rainforests, and jaw-dropping views. Here are 5 stops you can’t skip:

1. Twin Falls – A perfect first waterfall stop with short trails leading to beautiful swimming pools.

2. Three Bears Waterfall (Upper Waikani Falls) – A stunning triple waterfall right off the road—best viewed after some rain!

3. Black Sand Beach at Waiʻānapanapa State Park – A must-see with volcanic black sand, sea caves, and crashing waves.

4. The waterfall at the end (Waimoku Falls, Pipiwai Trail) – A breathtaking 400-ft waterfall, reached after an epic bamboo forest hike.

5. Banana Bread at Aunty Sandy’s – A Road to Hana essential! Soft, warm, and made fresh—don’t skip this.

🚗 First time doing the Road to Hana? If you’re not super adventurous or comfortable driving narrow, winding roads with tight turns and limited parking, I highly recommend hiring a private guide! They’ll handle the driving while you enjoy the views stress-free. Plus, certain areas have illegal parking restrictions, and a local guide knows the best (and legal) places to stop!

The Road to Hana is all about the journey—take your time, enjoy the views, and soak in the adventure! #RoadToHana #MauiMustDo #HawaiiAdventures

... Read moreHey fellow travelers! If you're planning a trip to Maui, let me tell you, the Road to Hana is an absolute non-negotiable. I recently experienced it, and it's truly the heart of Maui's natural beauty. It's more than just a drive; it's an immersive journey through lush rainforests, stunning coastlines, and serene waterfalls that will stay with you long after your tan fades. To make the most of your adventure, think of it as planning an epic Road to Hana itinerary. My personal advice? Start early! We left Paia around 7 AM, and it made all the difference in beating the crowds at popular spots like Twin Falls and the Black Sand Beach. You really need to dedicate a full day, easily 10-12 hours, to truly savor the experience without feeling rushed. Don't just tick off boxes; allow yourself time to swim, hike a bit, and simply soak in the incredible views. Many people use a dedicated Road to Hana guide app, which is super helpful for navigating and finding hidden gems, especially since cell service can be spotty. Download offline maps beforehand – trust me on this one! Before you hit the road, make sure your car is ready for the journey. While most of the main stops are on paved roads, you'll still be on winding, narrow paths. Fill up your gas tank in Paia, as there are very few options once you're on the route. Pack a cooler with plenty of water and snacks – you'll be grateful for them! Don't forget bug spray (especially for waterfall hikes), sun protection, swimsuits, and towels. And a little cash for those amazing roadside banana bread stands and fruit stalls is a must. Driving the Road to Hana requires a bit of patience and respect. It's a local highway, so if a local is behind you, find a safe spot to pull over and let them pass. Take it slow around blind corners, and always, always respect 'no parking' signs. The last thing you want is a ticket or to block traffic. For first-timers, or if you're not comfortable with tricky driving, seriously consider hiring a private guide. They know all the legal parking spots, the best lookout points, and can share fascinating local insights, making your experience completely stress-free. While my article highlights 5 incredible stops, there are countless quick photo opportunities and smaller waterfalls along the way. Keep your eyes peeled, but always prioritize safety when pulling over. The beauty of the Road to Hana is that every turn offers a new vista. It’s an unforgettable part of any Maui trip, providing a glimpse into the island’s wild, untouched heart.
