When I was younger, I used to write a lot of poetry. I remember writing about my dad, and back then every word came from a place of hurt. I was trying to put language around an absence I didn’t understand about a little girl who couldn’t figure out why someone she loved could leave and never come back. It’s strange getting to write about that same little girl now, all these years later, because the story feels completely different in my hands. The absence is still part of my story, but I no longer write about it from the same wound. Somewhere along the way, God met me in the place his absence left behind and filled it with something I didn’t even know I had been searching for. And maybe that’s one of the most beautiful things about healing, because even though God did not change the pages I’ve already lived He changed the hands that are holding the pen. I used to write poems about the father who left and now I get to write them about the Father who answered when I called out to him for the first time.
