The point was to socialize him with dogs…

... Read moreWhen I first started taking my golden retriever to the dog park, my goal was to help him socialize with other dogs. However, I found that he often ignored them and gravitated more toward the humans there. At first, this was a bit frustrating because socializing with other dogs is important for their development and well-being. Through experience and some research, I realized that every dog has a unique personality and social preference, much like people. Some dogs are naturally more inclined to bond with humans rather than fellow pups. This doesn’t mean your dog won’t benefit from dog-to-dog interactions, but the approach to socialization might need to be gradual and tailored. One helpful strategy I used was to engage with other dog owners first—chatting and creating a friendly environment—then slowly introducing my dog to calm, well-socialized dogs nearby. Positive reinforcement, like treats and praise during dog interactions, also encouraged him to feel safe and enjoy the company of other dogs. If your dog prefers people over dogs at the park, try not to be discouraged. Instead, embrace the bonding time with humans and use it as a stepping stone to build confidence around other dogs. Remember, socialization is a process that takes time and patience, and even dogs who prefer human company can thrive with consistent, positive experiences.
