He Hates My Piercings

It's a struggle many of us with body modifications face, isn't it? When you're in a relationship, and your partner just doesn't get your piercings, or worse, actively dislikes them. My little diary entry barely scratched the surface of what it feels like when someone you're dating openly 'hates' a part of your self-expression. I've been thinking a lot about what my piercings, especially my facial ones, truly mean to me, and how that clashes with others' perceptions. Take something like a frenzy piercing, for instance. For those who aren't familiar, a frenulum piercing is placed in the thin web of tissue under your tongue (lingual frenulum) or sometimes the upper lip (labial frenulum). For me, it was a subtle yet significant way to express myself. It’s not always immediately visible, but it's there, a little secret statement. When I got it, I believed it was unique and felt true to myself. But then, when it comes to dating, sometimes people can be so quick to judge. They might even believe that having such piercings makes you shallow or less serious, which absolutely isn't the case. It’s disheartening when you're trying to build a connection with someone, and they constantly mention their dislike for your piercings. It makes you question things. You start to wonder if your look, which you feel so confidently in, is actually a barrier. It’s hard not to take it personally when someone you care about can't accept a part of what makes you, you. I know my look matters to me, but it feels like it matters negatively to them. I’ve found myself journaling a lot about this. It's a mental health exercise to process these feelings. Why do I feel the need to defend my choices? Why do I let someone else's opinion affect my confidence? My piercings are more than just metal; they’re a narrative of my journey, my individuality, and my courage to stand out. They make me feel more myself, more authentic. And honestly, isn’t that what matters most? When a partner specifically expresses disdain for your facial piercings, it can erode your self-esteem. It makes you feel like you have to choose between being yourself and being loved. But I've come to realize that true acceptance means embracing every facet of a person, even the ones you might not personally choose for yourself. My piercings aren't a phase or a mistake; they are a part of my identity. And if someone truly cares, they'll see past the surface-level judgments and appreciate the person underneath. This journey has taught me a lot about self-love and recognizing what I deserve in a relationship – acceptance, not judgment.
