Mission collect the egg #relaxing #chicken #blind
There's truly nothing like the simple pleasure of collecting fresh eggs from your own backyard flock. Every morning (or sometimes afternoon!), it’s a little treasure hunt, and the reward is pure gold: warm, delicious eggs, straight from the source. For me, it’s not just about getting breakfast; it’s also about checking in on my hens and enjoying a moment of calm. Daily collection is super important for a few reasons. First, it helps prevent eggs from getting broken or dirty in the nesting boxes. Broken eggs can attract pests and make a mess, which nobody wants! Second, regular collection reduces the chances of a hen going broody. While a broody hen is adorable, it means she's sitting on eggs instead of laying new ones, which can slow down your egg supply. And of course, collecting daily ensures you’re always getting the freshest possible eggs, which truly do taste better. I usually collect them once a day, typically in the late morning or early afternoon, after most of them have finished laying for the day. I always use a gentle hand and carry a small basket or a clean bucket. As I pick up each egg, I quickly check it for any cracks or unusual textures. Sometimes you'll find a 'surprise' egg laid outside the nesting box – it always makes me smile! Or you might get a double-yolker, which feels like winning the lottery. You also learn to recognize which hen lays which color egg; it’s those little everyday discoveries that make backyard chickens such a rewarding hobby. One of the best things about fresh backyard eggs is how long they can last, especially if you handle them correctly. The natural protective coating on the shell, called the 'bloom,' keeps bacteria out. Because of this, many people, including myself, store unwashed eggs on the counter for a week or two. If they last longer than that, or if you decide to wash them (which removes the bloom), they should definitely go into the refrigerator. Just remember, once an egg is washed, refrigeration is key to maintaining freshness. Beyond the incredible taste difference (seriously, store-bought eggs just don't compare!), there's a real sense of connection to your food source. Knowing exactly where your eggs come from, and that your hens are happy and well-cared for, makes every meal feel more special. Plus, my chickens are hilarious and watching them peck around the yard is super relaxing. Sometimes you have a special hen in your flock, one that needs a little extra care or has a unique personality; they all contribute to the joy of backyard egg collecting. Each egg feels like a gift from these amazing creatures. If you're thinking about starting your own flock, I highly recommend it. The initial setup takes a bit of work, but the daily rewards, from fresh eggs to endless entertainment, are absolutely worth it. There’s a calming rhythm to it all, a true mission of collecting nature's perfect food right from your own backyard.
