The hens are happy with their new goat house chick
You know, one of the biggest joys of living on Prettyanpetite Farm is finding creative solutions for our animal friends. When we decided our hens needed a bigger, comfier home, we looked around and realized our old goat house was just sitting there, waiting for a new purpose! It wasn't an immediate decision, of course. We had to think about whether it would truly be suitable for chickens. We considered factors like ventilation, predator protection, and ease of cleaning. After some planning and a bit of DIY work, transforming it into the ultimate chicken box for our feathered ladies was a project we absolutely loved. Seeing our hens clucking happily and pecking around their spacious new digs in what used to be a goat house fills my heart with so much warmth. It’s not just about providing shelter; it’s about giving them a comfortable, stimulating environment where they can truly thrive. We added new roosting bars at different heights, some cozy nesting boxes, and made sure the floor was easy to clean. The natural light coming in from the existing windows was a huge bonus, and we even installed a pop-door for easy access to their run. It’s incredible how much personality each hen shows when they have room to spread their wings! For anyone out there considering repurposing an old shed or animal housing for chickens, I highly recommend it! It can be a cost-effective and sustainable way to provide excellent housing. My top tips would be: Assess the structure: Is it sturdy? Does it have good bones? Check for any sharp edges or potential hazards. Ventilation is key: Chickens need fresh air, especially in warmer months. Ensure there are vents high up and lower down to create airflow without drafts directly on the birds. Predator proofing: This is non-negotiable. Goats and chickens have different predator concerns. We reinforced all openings with hardware cloth and made sure the door latched securely. Easy cleaning: Design the interior so you can easily muck out bedding. Removable roosting bars and nesting boxes are a lifesaver! Nesting boxes & roosts: Provide enough nesting boxes (one for every 3-4 hens) and ample roosting space for all your birds to comfortably perch at night. Our 'goat house chicken box' has become such a conversation starter, and it proves that with a little creativity, you can create wonderful spaces for your animals. It’s been a fantastic journey watching our flock enjoy their upgraded home, and it truly makes farm life here at Prettyanpetite Farm even more rewarding.
