Pregnancy symptoms I didn’t expect

There’s plenty of pregnancy symptoms that we hear about often and tend to expect but there was so many I wasn’t expecting, so here are my biggest unexpected symptoms!

1. Congestion/Runny nose

This symptom has been easily one of my least favorites. From the moment I found out I was pregnant to now- it’s like I’m constantly going through allergies and there is not a moment in time where my nose isn’t stuffy. I have stocked every room in my home with tissues because I always need them. I work in the medical field and the people I work with always think I’m sick and I have to swear up and down that I’m not 😩

2. Constipation

This is my absolute worst symptom that I have. It has been my own personal hell. Beforehand I knew with my daily thermos of coffee (caffeine as we know is a big stimulant) I would use the restroom. I have made the necessary cut on my caffeine and have struggled to use the restroom often DAYS at a time which is just so uncomfortable. I have tried several different things recommended by my OB, such as prune juice, miralax, and if no success, magnesium citrate 🤮

3. Acne

Lastly acne has been such an unfortunate symptom. I think this varies for each person, for example, I’ve had issues with acne my whole life and this just made it blow up to an extreme, and I have a friend who never really struggled with acne and she was glowing her whole pregnancy. I feel like I am 15 all over and nothing I do remedies the issue. But your hormones change and you start producing so much oil. As I’ve gotten farther into my pregnancy this symptom has improved exponentially!

... Read morePregnancy can bring a myriad of symptoms that vary from person to person. While many expect common signs such as morning sickness or fatigue, some symptoms might come as a shock. When dealing with unexpected congestion, it's essential to note that hormonal changes can lead to nasal congestion due to increased blood flow and mucus production. Additionally, constipation is often overlooked, yet it affects many pregnant women due to hormonal changes that slow down the digestive system. To manage this, staying hydrated and consuming fiber-rich foods can be beneficial. Acne is another symptom that can surprise many; fluctuating hormone levels during pregnancy can lead to increased oil production and breakouts. Women experiencing these issues should not feel alone, as many share similar struggles. Seeking advice from healthcare professionals and finding safe solutions can make navigating these symptoms more manageable. Engaging with other mothers through online platforms can also provide supportive communities for sharing experiences and coping strategies. Remember, every pregnancy is unique, and understanding what to expect can help prepare for the journey ahead. Your experience is valid, and sharing helps to normalise these conversations.
