9 yrs down as an Amputee
My journey as an amputee has been a profound one, and hitting the 9-year mark feels like a significant achievement. It's a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the incredible support system around me. When I reflect on these years, so much of it revolves around learning to move again, especially mastering the art of crutching and finding new ways to express myself, like on platforms such as TikTok. Crutching isn't just a means of getting around; it's become an extension of my identity. Initially, it was about regaining basic mobility, but over time, it transformed into a form of expression and even a workout! I've learned to navigate various terrains, from bustling city streets to quiet park paths. It's about finding that rhythm, that balance, and realizing that you really "Can Still Move & Groove," even if it looks a little different than before. For anyone starting out, my biggest tip is patience and practice. Don't be afraid to experiment with different crutching techniques to find what feels most stable and efficient for you. Whether it’s a standard two-point, four-point, or swing-through gait, listen to your body and build strength gradually. Working on my core and upper body strength, often incorporating exercises like those on the parallel bars, has been crucial for both stability and endurance. TikTok has surprisingly become a wonderful outlet for sharing my experiences. It’s a place where I can showcase the reality of amputee life—the good, the challenging, and the utterly mundane—all with a touch of humor and authenticity. When I started posting, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the community I found has been incredibly uplifting. Sharing short clips of "mid-workout" moments, daily navigating, or even just dancing on my crutches has connected me with so many others who understand or are curious. My advice for creating content? Be yourself! People crave genuine stories. Show your progress, your struggles, and most importantly, your personality. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about sharing your unique perspective and showing the world that life as an amputee is vibrant and full of possibility. One of the most powerful lessons from these past nine years, and something I often try to convey through my posts, is the importance of mental fortitude. There are days when motivation wanes, and even simple tasks feel overwhelming. But that's when I remind myself of how far I've come. The phrase "PROT BE OKAY" (as in, 'it's going to be okay') resonates deeply. It's about accepting the new normal, embracing the challenges, and celebrating every small victory. Whether it's adapting to a new prosthetic, trying a new gym routine, or simply having a good day, every step forward counts. Connecting with other amputees, whether online or in person, has also been a huge source of encouragement, reminding me that "PEOPLE THAT'S ALL" (we're all in this together, facing our unique journeys) and that I'm not alone. So, as I look forward to many more years, I'm excited to continue exploring, growing, and sharing. My hope is that my journey can inspire someone else to keep moving, keep grooving, and find their own unique way to thrive. Here's to proving that with perseverance, anything is possible!
