To think this day has been marked on my calendar for the last two months.
Today was supposed to be the day. Treatment would be over, and Rupert would finally be free from crate rest. We'd be celebrating his first zoomies, planning our first road trip, and starting the next chapter we'd spent months dreaming about.
Instead, today is another reminder that there was no reason he shouldn't be here. If he'd simply been given heartworm prevention by his previous owners, he should be curled up in bed beside me right now.
Through every setback, every complication, and every vet visit that left me terrified, I never stopped believing we'd make it to this day together. Rupert fought so hard, and I never gave up hope.
Six months was never enough with my best little guy. But then again, I don't think a hundred years would have been enough either.
Those six months changed my life forever. they reminded me that sometimes the dogs who are with us for the shortest time leave the biggest impact, that being able to love is always worth the grief, and that sometimes not every battle can be won.
I know his vet team is mourning with us, they loved him so much and they worked endlessly to give him his only chance of survival and without them I may have not even gotten those six months.
We'll keep living the life we planned for him. The road trips. The camping trips. The adventures. He'll be with us in every sunrise, every trail, every campfire, and every mile.
How lucky are we. 🤍
Losing a beloved pet like Rupert is one of the toughest experiences any dog owner can face, and it's something I can deeply relate to. Having gone through a similar journey with my own dog, I understand the blend of hope, heartbreak, and gratitude that comes with such a profound bond. Heartworm disease is preventable, yet it sadly claims many dogs every year. It serves as a wake-up call about the importance of regular heartworm prevention treatments. If only Rupert's previous owners had consistently administered this, his life might have been extended, and more memories could have been shared. During those challenging six months, the moments of joy, like Rupert's first zoomies after crate rest, were priceless. I remember celebrating small victories with my dog — a wagging tail after a tough day or a quiet cuddle when treatment was hard. These experiences reminded me that even in pain and uncertainty, love and resilience shine through. The bond we form with our dogs means they live on in our hearts long after they're gone. Planning road trips, camping adventures, and hikes in Rupert's memory keeps his spirit alive. Every sunrise, trail, and campfire becomes a tribute to the happiness he brought into the world. Veterinarians and their teams play an invaluable role in our pets' lives. The dedication of Rupert’s vet team, who tirelessly worked to give him a fighting chance, reflects the compassion at the heart of veterinary care. Their support not only eases our pets' suffering but also helps us navigate the pain of loss. This journey underscores a universal truth: the time we share with our pets may be too short, but the love endures. Embracing grief while celebrating those special moments can help heal wounds left behind. For anyone going through similar heartache, remember to cherish those memories and allow yourself to feel both the sorrow and gratitude for your furry friend’s impact on your life.
