The moment a new life emerges from an egg is always magical, but sometimes, a chick comes out with a personality so big it's impossible to ignore. I recently had a little one hatch in our incubator, a fluffy yellow chick that gave me such an intense sideeye, I just had to share! It was definitely a baby chick with an attitude, making its grand entrance into the world. Watching a newly hatched chick break free from its eggshell is a fascinating process. They use an 'egg tooth' to pip, then slowly zip around the shell until they can push their way out. This particular little diva, still wet and trying to get its bearings, already had that sassy look. It reminded me that even from the start, every chick is unique. After hatching, it’s important to make sure they dry off properly. Sometimes, you might notice a 'dry membrane' clinging to them. This usually happens if the humidity in the incubator wasn't quite right. It's best to let it dry and fall off naturally if possible, or very gently assist if it's impeding movement, but always be cautious not to injure the delicate chick. Once they're dry and fluffy, it's time to move them from the incubator to a warm brooder. For newly hatched baby chicks, a consistent temperature is crucial, usually around 90-95°F for the first week, gradually decreasing. Fresh water with electrolytes and chick starter feed should be readily available. Observing them is key—are they active, pecking, and exploring? Or are they huddled too tightly, indicating they're cold, or spread out far apart, suggesting they're too hot? Some baby chicks just have more spunk than others. That 'angry baby chick' look often comes from their determination to explore and establish themselves. They peck at everything, including their siblings and your fingers, as a way to learn about their environment. It’s not aggression but pure curiosity and instinct. My sassy chick, with its fluffy yellow feathers, was immediately on the move, asserting its presence among the other intact eggs and its newly broken shell. As they grow, from newly hatched to 4-week-old chicks, their personalities continue to develop. You'll notice their down feathers being replaced by true feathers, and their pecking order starting to form. Many people get curious about sexing chicks early on. While there are methods like vent sexing (best left to professionals) or wing sexing, where you look at the primary and covert feather lengths, it's often unreliable for beginners with newly hatched chicks. For most backyard enthusiasts, it's easier to wait until they are older and show more clear secondary sex characteristics. Regardless of their gender, raising these fluffy bundles of joy, even the feisty ones, is an incredibly rewarding experience that brings so much life and character to a homestead.
