... Read moreWhen bringing home a new Yorkie, it's common to notice some behaviors that may seem puzzling at first—licking being one of the most frequent. From my own experience as a Yorkie owner, I quickly learned that licking can mean several things depending on the context. Firstly, Yorkies often lick as a form of communication and affection. This is their way of bonding with you and other family members. They may also lick to explore their environment or show submissiveness. However, excessive licking can sometimes indicate stress, anxiety, or even an underlying medical issue like allergies or skin irritations. In my journey with my Yorkie, I noticed he licked more when he was nervous or seeking attention, which is very common with this breed that thrives on companionship. Providing plenty of mental stimulation, consistent training, and plenty of cuddles helped reduce his anxious licking over time. If your Yorkie's licking seems compulsive or is focused on certain areas of the body, it might be wise to consult a vet to rule out allergies or infections. Remember, addressing the root cause—whether emotional or physical—is key to managing this behavior effectively. Overall, understanding your Yorkie’s licking as a natural part of their personality while observing for any signs of distress can make your pet parenting journey much smoother and more enjoyable.
