Weekend Activities: My son graduated
On Saturday, May 18, my son graduated high school. My husband and I are so proud of him. He finished strong with a 4.5 Weighted GPA.
Check out this video of him giving one of the commencement speeches, receiving his diploma, and in the end his entire class graduating. I was an emotional wreck over the weekend and I still am as I prepare myself for him to leave the nest and go to college. He’s headed to the esteemed Morehouse College in the Fall.
*Notice his graduation cap topper in the title photo.

Oh, graduation season! It's such a whirlwind of emotions, isn't it? One moment you're cheering with pride, the next you're secretly wiping away tears thinking about them leaving. My heart is still a little heavy, but so full of joy for my son and the entire Class of 2024. It truly is a bittersweet time as we celebrate their incredible achievements and look forward to their next big adventure, like heading off to college. For those of you with graduates, or if you're navigating this exciting yet emotional period, I've been thinking a lot about how we can truly cherish these final moments and prepare for the future. Beyond the cap and gown, there are so many ways to make this milestone unforgettable. One thing many families do to celebrate their senior's journey is create a 'senior slideshow' or a memory book. While my focus was on the ceremony itself, I've seen some amazing ideas for capturing those precious high school years. Think about gathering photos from their childhood, school events, sports, and friendships. You can put together a digital slideshow with their favorite music for a graduation party, or even compile a physical scrapbook. It's not just a gift for them; it's a wonderful way for you, as parents, to reflect on how far they've come. Seeing those baby pictures next to their senior portraits really hits differently! It makes the 'D24GL' (Diploma 2024 Graduate) moment even more poignant. And then there's the 'leaving the nest' part. Preparing for college isn't just about packing suitcases – it's an emotional journey for everyone. I'm trying to soak up every last moment, from late-night chats to casual family dinners. We're talking about everything from dorm room essentials to budgeting and staying in touch. It's a balance of giving them independence while letting them know your support is always there. It’s okay to feel a mix of excitement and a little bit of sadness. I find comfort in connecting with other parents who are going through the same thing. Another practical tip I've picked up is creating a 'graduation fund' for those unexpected college expenses or even a special celebratory trip. It can be a great way to involve family and friends who want to contribute to their future. And let's not forget about savoring the small traditions – maybe a special family meal, a hike, or just a movie night that you know will become less frequent soon. Ultimately, this season is about celebrating the incredible young adults they've become. Whether you're making a senior slideshow, planning a party, or just having heartfelt conversations, these moments are building blocks for their next chapter. To all the graduates and their proud families out there, especially the Class of 2024, congratulations again! How are you making these final weeks before college memorable for your senior?
