5 ADHD moments we don’t talk about

4/18 Edited to

... Read moreLiving with ADHD often means facing challenges that aren't immediately obvious to others, and some moments can feel isolating because they rarely get discussed openly. For example, experiencing a sudden wave of tears simply from feeling overwhelmed isn't about weakness; it's the result of emotional dysregulation that many with ADHD deal with daily. It’s important to recognize that these intense emotions can build up quietly until something triggers them. Another common experience is laughing at the wrong moment during conversations because your brain zoned out. This isn’t about being rude or uncaring; it’s a reflection of how ADHD affects focus and social interactions. Many people with ADHD try to mask these moments, which can lead to feeling ashamed afterward. Understanding that this is a shared experience can help reduce that shame. The relief felt when plans get cancelled can also be misunderstood. Saying yes to social plans often comes from a sense of obligation, but underneath, there might be a dread from sensory overload or low social energy – what’s often called a drained "social battery." Recognizing that you’re not alone in feeling this relief can be empowering. Procrastinating on tasks, especially avoiding tasks that should take minutes but end up being put off for hours, stems from the difficulty ADHD brains have in making the jump from intention to action. This avoidance can create a shame spiral, making it even harder to start. Using tools like focus apps or timers, designed with ADHD brains in mind, can sometimes help bridge this gap. Lastly, many with ADHD struggle with interoception—the ability to sense the body’s needs—leading to forgetting fundamental things like eating or drinking until physical symptoms, like headaches, arise. This can seriously impact health if unnoticed. Sharing these moments openly and using supportive tools can make navigating ADHD feel less isolating. Finding strategies that respect these unique challenges, such as apps tailored for ADHD focus and emotional regulation, can transform daily struggles into manageable parts of life.

I do forget to eat/drink. The WORST is I will need to go to the bathroom. Forget I need to go and then it becomes a race to avoid bladder splatter. 🤦‍♀️
