I’ve never been acne prone, however I did get the pre period breakout a lot of women experience. I still get the occasional zit or pimple, but it is few and far between
• Subtle Weight Loss
I have never been a “big girl”, I’m very active and physically fit. But I did notice a change in the way some of my clothes fit. Could it have been in my head? Maybe. But it’s something I’ve noticed.
• Periods
With Xulane, you have the option of having an “off week” where you menstruate like normal, or replacing your patch like normal and skipping your period. It took a while to regulate, and I had an irregular period the first month being on it, but after that everything seems to be normal. I get occasional spotting, but nothing more than that.
• Sex Drive
Before starting, I was warned that it will probably cause a decrease in my sex drive. That was 3ish months ago, and if anything I think it’s gone up.
I love the simplicity of the patch, and how easy it is to get. I never went in for a consult or anything. I ordered it through the Planned Parenthood App, and I picked it up a few days later.
Initially I was worried about it not sticking or getting caught on my bra, but I haven’t had much of an issue with it. I place it on either my shoulder blade, or my outer arm and they have never fallen off. I do catch my bra strap on it sometimes, but it always rehears without any problem.
✨Keep in mind, this is just the brand Xulane. I have heard of other brands that have other effects.✨

... Read moreOkay, so I’ve already shared my personal journey with Xulane, but I know when I was thinking about starting 'the patch,' I had a ton of questions beyond just the immediate effects. So, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into some of the practicalities and things I've learned that might help you too!
First off, let’s talk a bit more about applying 'the patch' itself. While I mentioned it sticks really well for me, I quickly learned a few tricks to make sure it stays put. Always make sure your skin is clean, dry, and free of any lotions, oils, or powders before you apply it. I usually put mine on after a shower, making sure my skin is completely dry. You also want to press it firmly for at least 10 seconds, especially around the edges, to ensure a good seal. I rotate where I put it – shoulder blade, outer arm, sometimes even my lower back – to avoid skin irritation. And yes, sometimes my bra strap tries to attack it, but it genuinely re-adheres without a problem. Just smooth it back down! What if 'the patch' completely falls off, though? It hasn't happened to me yet, but I did read up on it. If it comes off for less than 24 hours, you can just reapply the same one or put on a new one and stay on your original schedule. If it's off for more than 24 hours (or you're not sure how long), you’ll need to put on a new patch and start a new 7-day cycle, which means your "patch change day" shifts, and you'll need backup birth control for the first 7 days of that new cycle. Definitely check the official instructions for exact details, but that's the gist!
Beyond the physical effects, many people wonder about the first few weeks or months. I mentioned my period was a bit irregular initially, and that’s super common. Your body is adjusting to the hormones, so don't be surprised by some spotting or breakthrough bleeding, especially in the first couple of cycles. It usually settles down. Also, remember 'the patch' isn't instantly effective. Most guidelines suggest using a backup method for the first 7 days if you start it on any day other than the first day of your period. This is a crucial detail for peace of mind when you're just getting started with Xulane.
While I've been lucky with my experience, it's also good to be aware of other potential side effects that some people might encounter with hormonal birth control like Xulane. Things like mild headaches, breast tenderness, or even subtle mood changes are sometimes reported. I recommend keeping a little journal for the first few months to track how you're feeling. This way, if you do notice anything concerning or persistent, you have a clear record to discuss with your doctor. Everyone’s body reacts differently, and what works wonderfully for one person might not be the best fit for another. The important thing is to listen to your body and communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns, big or small.
Managing 'the patch' schedule is pretty straightforward. I use a reminder app on my phone to tell me when to change it each week – it’s a lifesaver! It takes the guesswork out of it and ensures I never miss a day. The convenience of not having to remember a pill daily is a huge plus for me, and it's one of the main reasons I opted for 'the patch' in the first place! Before you even start, I'd suggest having a chat with your doctor or healthcare provider. Even though I got mine through Planned Parenthood without a consult, a quick conversation can help you understand if Xulane is the right choice for your specific health needs and answer any lingering questions you might have about potential interactions or personal risks. It’s always best to be informed and feel confident in your choice. Hopefully, these extra insights help anyone considering or starting their Xulane journey.
