Researching local maps can reveal old boardwalks or forgotten settlements. Areas around old piers, like those seen dramatically silhouetted against the moon, are particularly promising. People have been dropping items off piers for decades, even centuries! Post-Storm Beaches: Storms, especially hurricanes, can be a detectorist's dream. They churn up the sand, exposing layers untouched for years. Always check the beach after a significant storm (when safe!). The Wet Sand and Surf Line: Don't just stick to the dry sand! The wet sand and shallow surf are excellent spots. Many items are lost when people go swimming. A good water-resistant detector is key here. One of my absolute favorite ways to hunt is at night, just like the image of a detectorist on a sandy beach under the moon. Night detecting offers a unique experience. Always get permission and check local ordinances first. Old Schoolyards: Many old schools have been rebuilt, but their grounds might still hold lost coins or toys from generations past. Shallow Rivers and Creeks: Florida's waterways have seen a lot of activity. Look for old crossing points or areas where people historically gathered. Research Regulations: This is non-negotiable! Florida has strict laws regarding metal detecting, especially on state parks and historic sites. Always know before you go. Patience is Key: You won't find a treasure every time, but every signal is an adventure. Equip Wisely: A quality, water-resistant detector, a sturdy sand scoop, headphones, and a finds pouch are essential. Respect the Environment: Always fill your holes, take out any trash, and leave the area better than you found it.
