After an absolutely captivating first day soaking in the history and vibrant culture of Antigua, I couldn't help but dream about what else Guatemala has to offer on a longer trip! While Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its incredible Santa Catalina Arch and stunning baroque architecture like the grand yellow churches I explored, many travelers also wonder about Guatemala's beautiful coastlines. And let me tell you, if you're looking for a different kind of adventure, Guatemala's beaches are definitely worth exploring! Most people head to Guatemala's Pacific coast for beach vibes. You won't find the white sand, turquoise water paradise you might imagine from Caribbean islands, but what you will find is unique volcanic black sand beaches, fantastic surf, and a laid-back atmosphere. One of my top recommendations would be El Paredón Buena Vista. It’s become a hotspot for surfers, both beginners and experienced, with consistent waves and surf schools readily available. Imagine spending your mornings catching waves and your afternoons relaxing in a hammock, watching breathtaking sunsets over the Pacific – it sounds like pure bliss after a day of wandering through Antigua's historic streets! Another great option on the Pacific side is Monterrico. This area is known for its mangrove forests, which you can explore by boat, and it's also a significant sea turtle nesting site. If you're visiting between September and November, you might even get to witness baby sea turtles being released into the ocean – a truly unforgettable experience! The vibe here is a bit more local, with plenty of fresh seafood shacks serving up delicious catches of the day. While less conventional for 'beaches' in the typical sense, I've also heard incredible things about the shores of Lake Atitlán. It's not an ocean beach, but the lake is surrounded by towering volcanoes and indigenous villages, offering stunning views and opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. It’s a completely different kind of 'beach' experience, more about the serene natural beauty and cultural immersion. For those seeking something truly off the beaten path, Guatemala does have a small Caribbean coastline, primarily around Livingston. This Garifuna town is only accessible by boat and offers a unique cultural experience with reggae music, delicious seafood, and a more rustic, wild beach feel. The beaches here are often fringed with palm trees and have a distinctly different character from the Pacific side. So, whether you're drawn to the historic charm of Antigua – perhaps after enjoying some fresh sliced mangoes from a bustling market – or yearning for the sun, sand, and surf, Guatemala truly has it all. My first day in Antigua was just the beginning, and I'm already planning my next trip to explore those amazing beaches!
