Kill them with kindness

I've always been someone who believed in the power of kindness. Like the proverb says, 'Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healing to the body.' It’s a beautiful sentiment, and for so long, I tried to live by it, extending warmth and understanding to everyone I met. I thought that if I just kept being kind, eventually, it would make a difference, or at least come back to me. But then, life teaches you some tough lessons, doesn't it? I’ve found myself wrestling with the question: 'Does everyone truly deserve your kindness?' It’s a hard pill to swallow, but I’ve come to realize that the answer, for me, is no. And honestly, discovering that truth has been incredibly freeing. I remember this one time, I went above and beyond for a colleague who constantly complained and never pulled their weight. I covered their shifts, helped with their workload, and always offered a listening ear. I genuinely thought my kindness would inspire them, or at least make them appreciate me. Instead, they just took it for granted, expecting it, and even started making snide remarks about my 'niceness.' It left me feeling completely drained, resentful, and wondering why I bothered. My soul didn't feel sweet; it felt bitter. This isn't about becoming a cold-hearted person. Far from it! It’s about understanding that your kindness, your energy, and your emotional generosity are precious resources. You wouldn't pour expensive honey onto cracked concrete, expecting it to heal the pavement, right? You'd save it for nourishing a meal or soothing a sore throat. In the same way, we need to be discerning about where we direct our emotional 'honey.' Setting boundaries isn't selfish; it's self-preservation. It's realizing that while basic human decency is owed to everyone, an endless well of personal kindness, emotional labor, and forgiveness isn't. Some people, for various reasons – their own struggles, their inability to reciprocate, or even their toxic patterns – will only deplete you. And that’s okay to acknowledge. For me, it’s been a journey of listening to my gut. When I feel that familiar pang of dread or exhaustion at the thought of engaging with someone, that’s my cue. It’s a signal that perhaps this person isn't in a place to receive my kindness constructively, or worse, they might actively exploit it. It doesn't mean I wish them ill, or that I'm rude. It just means I protect my peace by choosing to invest my emotional energy elsewhere. So, how do we reconcile the beautiful truth that kind words are healing with the reality that not everyone deserves our deepest kindness? It's about wise giving. It's about directing your warmth to those who genuinely need it, appreciate it, and ideally, reciprocate it. It’s about understanding that sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for yourself is to say "no," to create distance, or to simply offer polite indifference instead of heartfelt generosity. Your well-being matters, and protecting your inner peace is a profound act of self-kindness.
