Book Review: Monster High: The Ghoul Next Door

Hi! This is my fifth book review for the year. Today I am going to review the book:

๐Ÿ“—Monster High: The Ghoul Next Door

Review: The Ghoul Next Door was a good book. I guess the reason I say it is a good book is because I am re-reading this book/book series as an adult with 2025 standards. As nostalgic as this book is, this book is filled with standards from fourteen years ago, in 2011, such as forgiving your friends for atrocious behavior. For example, towards the end in chapter 25, Cleo asks Melody, who mind the audience, are not really friends they only share the same group of friends, for forgiveness for befriending the enemy knowing it would endanger her community of RADs. While that is her point of this story, Cleo is very self-centered and only did all of this so her friends could envy her. This showed that even in the end, Cleo only cared more about herself rather than giving an actual apology to those she hurt. Then ending of the book shows she really didnโ€™t have character development, but Melody and Frankie did! Even though I think Frankie is still male-centered in her views. This book was still well written and really did give the point of views from the millennials who were teens in the early 2010s.

Overall โญ๏ธ Rating: 5/5

โ€ผ๏ธAs you can see I changed the format of how I did this review. I think I might do it like this from now on. And again, just a reminder that these reviews are based on my (emphasis on MY) opinion! I am allowed to give my opinion on books! We can also agree to disagree! โ€ผ๏ธ

... Read moreOkay, so my recent re-read of 'The Ghoul Next Door' got me thinking a lot about the entire 'Monster High' book series by Lisi Harrison. It's truly fascinating how these books, which first emerged in the early 2010s, captured the hearts of so many young adult readers, including myself! Lisi Harrison really had a knack for creating a world that felt both fantastical and incredibly relatable. Her writing brought these iconic monster teens to life, giving them distinct personalities and struggles that went beyond just their supernatural origins. When you see the distinct art style on the book covers, like the one with the skull emblem and snake headpiece, you immediately get a sense of the unique vibe she created. She penned several books in the series, including classics like 'Monster High' (the first one!) and 'The Ghoul Next Door,' each one deepening the lore and expanding the friendships. What I loved, and still appreciate, about Harrison's approach is how she 'portrays the lives of fourteen' โ€“ and essentially, all teenagers โ€“ navigating the complexities of high school, friendships, and self-discovery, all while being literal monsters! The books tackled themes of acceptance, fitting in, and embracing your unique qualities, which are timeless YA concerns. It wasn't just about the ghoulish fun; there was genuine heart in how these characters, like Frankie and Melody, learned to stand up for themselves and each other, even when facing a 'ghoul next door' situation that challenged their community. Many of us might know Monster High from the dolls or animated shows, but the books are where it all truly began for a lot of fans. Lisi Harrison laid the groundwork for the entire franchise, establishing the core friendships and conflicts that made the world so compelling. It's a testament to her storytelling that the series has had such longevity, resonating with multiple generations and even making a 'back and deader than ever' comeback in various forms. It shows that the stories she crafted were robust enough to inspire a whole universe. Going back to my review, while Cleo's character arc might have felt stagnant in 'The Ghoul Next Door' when re-read as an adult, the series as a whole often explored the nuances of friendship and personal growth. Characters evolved, sometimes subtly, over multiple books. It made you actively root for them, even the ones who started off a bit self-centered. You saw the struggle, the missteps, and the eventual triumphs in their relationships, which is a powerful message for any reader. Revisiting these books isn't just about nostalgia for the early 2010s; it's also a chance to appreciate a well-crafted YA series that pioneered a blend of monster lore and relatable teen drama. They might have some '2010s standards' as I noted, but the core messages about friendship, acceptance, and finding your place remain incredibly relevant. Itโ€™s part of what makes the 'Monster High book series' so enduring. If you grew up with these books, or if you're just discovering them, I'd love to hear your thoughts! What's your favorite book in the series, or which character resonated with you the most?

Iโ€™ve always been interested in monster high even as a kid, but my parents never liked the idea. Maybe I should give myself the opportunity to get into it.
