Small biz owner: January Reflection

I felt a little 🤓 today, so I decided to sit down and review and properly document my January.

For a bit of context, I teach people how to make flowers using paper in my small studio, tucked away in the heart of Chinatown.

This month, I hosted a private session to celebrate a beautiful mummy’s birthday and a special edition hen’s party featuring a flower I don’t usually teach, the calla lily. It felt refreshing to step slightly out of my usual workshop flow and try something different.

Watching my studio get all dolled up for these special occasions gave me the fuzziest, warmest feeling. I don’t quite know how to explain it. Maybe it’s feeling the love while watching people express love in their own ways. 🥹

I also met two participants who shared that they were here because they wanted to handmake flowers for their late loved ones. That moment really stayed with me 🥹

It’s always humbling to realise how flowers hold so much meaning beyond just being pretty.

I still have days where I wonder if I made the right leap of faith to build this little crafting hustle, but moments like these remind me that I did. Flowers and crafting really are gentle ways to reach the heart and build calm, warmth and connection.

Many participants were flower lovers in their own ways and I loved hearing how they express that love. Some through crocheting, others by intentionally seeking out flower related activities like this. It’s been really grounding to see how flowers quietly connect so many of us.

I’ve also had a couple of people reach out about potential corporate collaborations. It’s still very early days, but I’m keeping an open and positive mind about it. Let’s not jinx it for now 😛

January felt full in the gentlest, most reassuring way 🧸 I’m feeling a little anxious about Feb, but I’m exciting for all opportunities that have yet to come!!

... Read moreRunning a small flower craft business has taught me so much about the power of handmade gifts and community. Beyond teaching usual paper flower workshops, I found hosting private events like birthdays and bridal showers incredibly rewarding — it brought a fresh perspective and deeper connection with participants. Many attendees revealed touching stories about making flowers for late loved ones, showing how crafting can be a healing, emotional experience. This reinforced for me that small gestures like a handcrafted flower can hold profound meaning, far beyond their aesthetic beauty. I’m also excited about the potential for corporate collaborations that may open new doors for my business. Though still preliminary, it’s encouraging to see my passion gaining wider recognition and possibly expanding my reach in the small business scene. For those considering starting a creative side hustle, I’d suggest embracing vulnerability and authenticity. Share your story and stay open to unexpected opportunities. In my experience, crafting isn’t just work—it’s a gentle, grounding way to build warmth and connections that nurture both business and soul.

January check-in. February intention. One thing I truly value in this business is the monthly check-in. It’s a pause to look back at what January taught me what worked, what didn’t, and how to move forward with clarity instead of drifting. Because without reflection, it’s easy to stay busy…

At 18 & 17, We Took Over Our Parents’ Business
Two years ago, at the ages of 18 and 17, we took over our parents’ business. It was not by choice, but by responsibility, and a trust we are deeply grateful for. While still schooling full time, our parents handed us something they built from scratch over many years. What came with it was not su

Unsure if it’s the right time to takeover the biz
Back when we were 17 and 18, we often questioned whether taking over the business was the right decision. Even a few months in, the doubts were still there. We had zero experience. We did not know how to hire, manage supply or inventory, and even ended up in debt. There were times we struggled t
