It’s been such a fun challenge bringing this iconic character from The Amazing Digital Circus to life on my digital canvas. When I first decided to tackle Kinger, I knew I wanted to capture his unique, almost unsettling charm, especially his distinctive chess piece-like silhouette. First off, really pay attention to his core shape. He’s not a typical human figure, so thinking of him in terms of geometric shapes, like a stylized chess piece, really helps lay down the foundation. I usually start with simple forms in Clip Studio Paint to block out his body, making sure to get that slightly slumped, yet regal, posture correct. Don't be afraid to use lots of reference images from the show – they're super helpful for getting his proportions just right before diving into details. Then, the details! His large, expressive eyes are definitely a focal point for me. I try to give them that slightly vacant, yet often worried look that makes Kinger so endearing. Capturing that subtle emotion through just his eyes can really bring the character to life. And don't forget his fluffy collar, cuffs, and base – these aren't just accessories; they add so much character and texture. I spend a good amount of time on these elements, using different brush textures to make them look soft and distinct from his more rigid body parts. For digital artists, playing with a soft airbrush for the fluff and a harder brush for the main outlines can create a nice contrast. When it comes to shading or thinking about 'Kinger light,' it’s all about creating depth without losing that cartoonish, digital circus feel. I’m still experimenting, but I find that strong, simple cell shading often works best for TADC characters. You can define areas like under his collar or around his arms to give him volume. For the fluffy parts, a bit of soft lighting on the edges can really make them pop and give them that three-dimensional look.
