baby turkeys!
Raising baby turkeys can be a truly rewarding experience, especially for those engaged in homesteading and sustainable living. From my own time caring for poults, one thing I quickly realized is that their needs are quite specific compared to other poultry like chicks. Firstly, temperature control is crucial during the first few weeks. Baby turkeys, or poults, require warmth but are more sensitive to heat than chicks. Starting them off with a brooder temperature around 95°F and lowering it gradually each week keeps them comfortable and healthy. Proper ventilation without drafts is also important to prevent respiratory issues. Feeding is another key aspect. Unlike chicks, baby turkeys require higher protein content in their starter feed, ideally around 28%. A balanced diet enriched with vitamins and minerals supports rapid growth and strong immune systems. I found offering fresh water supplemented with probiotics helps with digestion and reduces the risk of common diseases. Housing should ensure safety from predators and sufficient space as poults grow quickly. Cleanliness is vital to avoid bacterial infections; frequent bedding changes and a dry environment promote good health. Social interactions among poults are fascinating. They are highly social creatures, so keeping them in groups minimizes stress and encourages natural behaviors. Observing their playful nature can also be entertaining! Overall, patience and attentive care make rearing baby turkeys a delightful endeavor. Whether it’s your first time or you’re an experienced homesteader, these little birds bring charm and productivity to your farm or backyard.
