hotel hunting has become the biggest joke to me as of recently but maybe im just buggin. I was thinking to book at Citizemn Bowery in NYC because I stayed there in 2022 but then I saw it was gonna cost nearly $1,000! that’s rent for a month in some places…
I had to dig up my old invoice and just as I suspected, the price for hotels has drastically spiked up.
In January of 2022 I paid $713.58 for four nights. If I tried to book that exact same hotel it’s now gonna cost me $996.26…basically $1,000!
I understand a high rise hotel in LES is bound to be expensive…but why am I paying $300 more when nothing new has been added? same room same place.
pros about this hotel:
the view was spectacular! and I love that you could control the entire room from an iPad.
cons:
so incredibly small and the fridge could barely fit a water bottle. it was cozy, but again the price is just too much now.
I need some advice on how to get good hotel deals because ya girl is clearly struggling.
... Read moreOkay, so like many of you, I've been scratching my head trying to figure out why hotel prices have gone through the roof lately! My experience with CitizenM Bowery in NYC, going from $713 to almost $1000 for the same 4-night stay, really hit home. It made me dive deep into what's actually driving these crazy costs, and I wanted to share what I found, plus some tips I've picked up to try and beat the system!
First off, the 'why.' It seems there are a few big culprits. Post-pandemic demand is huge – everyone's eager to travel, and hotels are capitalizing on that. Then there's inflation, which impacts everything from staff wages to utility bills and even the cost of those tiny toiletries. Hotels are passing those increased operating costs onto us. Plus, some areas, especially popular spots like NYC, are seeing limited supply combined with high demand, which always pushes prices up. It's a classic supply-and-demand situation, but it stings when you're the one paying!
Given my struggle to find an affordable stay, and remembering those 'spectacular views' but also the 'small space' of my previous room, I've started trying some new strategies. Here are some of my go-to tips for finding better hotel deals:
Be Flexible with Dates: If you can, avoid peak seasons, holidays, and big events. Even shifting your stay by a day or two can make a huge difference, especially if you can book weekdays instead of weekends.
Explore Alternative Neighborhoods: For NYC, instead of staying right in Manhattan, consider areas like Long Island City in Queens or parts of Brooklyn. You often get more for your money, and public transport usually makes getting around super easy. The 'NYC skyline at sunset' view might even be better from across the river!
Loyalty Programs & Credit Card Points: This is a big one for frequent travelers. Signing up for hotel loyalty programs can earn you points for free nights or upgrades. Many travel credit cards also offer fantastic sign-up bonuses and points that can be redeemed for hotel stays, seriously cutting down costs.
Book in Advance (or VERY Last Minute): For popular destinations, booking well in advance often secures better rates. However, if you're super flexible, sometimes last-minute deals pop up, especially if a hotel needs to fill empty rooms. It's a bit of a gamble, though!
Price Comparison Sites & Incognito Mode: Always check multiple sites (Booking.com, Expedia, Google Hotels, direct hotel websites). And here’s a tip I learned: use incognito mode when searching! Some sites track your visits and might show higher prices if you've looked up a specific hotel multiple times.
Consider Package Deals: Sometimes booking your flight and hotel together can unlock significant savings. It's worth checking out if you need both!
Read Reviews Carefully: Especially for budget options. You want to make sure you're not sacrificing too much comfort or safety for a lower price. My 'small space' experience reminds me that sometimes a deal isn't always a steal if the room isn't practical.
It's definitely a challenge out there, but with a bit of research and flexibility, I'm hoping to snag some better deals for my next adventure. What are your best tips for battling these high hotel prices? Let me know!
