I QUIT MY JOB FOR MY SISTER’S BIRTHDAY

quitting my job two weeks into it is NOT how I expected my summer to be. but here we are.

I worked for a summer program for international high schoolers where I lived on campus. what I thought was gonna be a fun learning experience and a chance to work with international kids (im a US high school teacher) was not at ALL what I was expecting.

I won’t get into the details (lest they find me) but I’ve never had such a rapid decline in my mental health before. I was miserable every day there, the kids weren’t even the bad part about it either they were very polite and kind. It was the adults who were constantly on a creepy power trip that made even breathing feel wrong.

Making the decision to leave felt wrong, I’ve never quit from a job like that before. Every job I’ve had I’ve stayed at for literal years, which made me feel some sort of odd loyalty to a place that wouldn’t care if I existed or not.

I also kept saying “do it for the money” but was the money really worth my literal sanity ??

So I quit. It was the day before my sister’s 21st birthday and I knew asking for the day off (we were allowed one day a week) would only prolong the inevitable. I kept thinking to myself;

Do I wanna look back at this time and remember missing my sister’s birthday for a job I can’t even stomach?

Once I had my answer, I knew what I had to do.

I will say, this position gave me perspective for sure. I’m eternally grateful for the school that I work at. I made friends during this experience (and we bonded for sure) and I’m up a few bands. I can’t say for sure if I could go back would I do it again, but I will say I’m proud for putting myself first, no matter how uncomfortable it may have felt. And now I get to celebrate my family in peace 🕊️

Sorry for the slight disappearance, as you can read I’ve had my hands full. But I’m back and ready to properly enjoy my summer 🔆

Until next time:)~

... Read moreQuitting a job is never an easy decision, especially when it involves financial stability. Many individuals face the dilemma of prioritizing work over personal well-being or cherished family moments. In this story, the author found herself in a summer program working with international high school students but quickly noticed the impact of a toxic workplace on her mental health. She realized that no job is worth sacrificing personal happiness and significant family events. Choosing to leave a job can lead to feelings of guilt, particularly for those who have a strong sense of loyalty. However, mental well-being should always come first. This narrative resonates with anyone who has faced similar challenges, showing the importance of setting boundaries and self-care. As the author recalls the decision to leave work for her sister’s 21st birthday, it serves as a powerful reminder of the value of family ties and living in the moment. With the rising awareness of mental health, many people are opting to leave jobs that negatively impact their well-being. It’s crucial to recognize that your mental health and relationships are worth more than any paycheck. Finding balance between work responsibilities and personal life is key to fulfillment. Celebrating milestones, such as birthdays, should take precedence over work commitments. This narrative encourages readers to reflect on their priorities and assertively pursue a life that feels right for them, even when faced with uncomfortable decisions. Remember, it’s about putting oneself first and cherishing moments that truly matter.

I miss the days where I could quit at the drop of a hat. Honestly mental health breaks should be factored into sick days.
