so two weeks ago I made a post about how I impulsively got a tattoo with my sister (featured on the cover) at this $40 flash event. I chose what I THOUGHT was a moth tattoo. I picked it, referred to it as a moth to literally everyone and even called it a moth in my post.
this tattoo was a moth in my eyes right up until @Gyliane commented wondering why no one else was mentioning how this wasn’t a moth at all.
In fact, it was a butterfly. A swallowtail butterfly.
I clearly don’t know my insects LOL so I googled it and they were right! Other than feeling like a complete moron, I knew what I needed to do.
I was already planning on getting a butterfly on my other wrist, so I just asked my tattoo artist if we could ACTUALLY do a moth this time. She said of course, and it all worked out in the end.
thank you Gyliane for pointing out my silly mistake. now I can actually say I have a moth tattoo lol.
do you have any tattoos? I think I’m done for now until I’m 25, then I’ll get some more.
... Read moreWow, my story about mistaking a butterfly for a moth for my tattoo really hit home for some of you! It truly was a "lesson learned" moment, and it got me thinking about how important it is to be super clear on what you want before getting inked. It's not just about liking a design; it's about understanding what it is and what it means to you.
Speaking of moths and butterflies, did you know their meanings are actually quite distinct? When I thought I was getting a moth, I was drawn to their mysterious, nocturnal vibe. Moths are often symbols of transformation, intuition, and even a quiet, resilient beauty that navigates the darkness. Some interpret them as representing vulnerability, faith, or even a connection to the spiritual world because they're attracted to light. A luna moth tattoo, for instance, is highly symbolic of rebirth and new beginnings due to its short adult lifespan and stunning appearance.
On the other hand, the butterfly tattoo I accidentally got symbolizes beauty, grace, freedom, and change. Like moths, they undergo metamorphosis, but their vibrant, daytime presence gives them a different energy – often associated with joy, lightness, and new beginnings. So, if you're ever choosing between a moth vs butterfly tattoo, think about the deeper meaning that resonates with you. Do you prefer the quiet introspection of the night or the vibrant dance of the day?
When you're trying to figure out your perfect design, don't just pick something off a flash sheet without a second thought, like I almost did! Consider looking at different styles. Are you into a simple small moth tattoo for a subtle hint of mystery, or perhaps a more intricate moth flower tattoo that blends natural elements? I've seen some absolutely gorgeous old school traditional moth tattoo designs that have so much character. And if you're like me and love the classic look, a luna moth tattoo black and white can be incredibly striking. Even a gypsy moth tattoo can carry unique historical or personal significance. It's all about what speaks to your soul!
My biggest piece of tattoo advice now is to do your homework. Once you have an idea, research artists whose style matches what you envision. Look at their portfolios, especially if you're after something specific like a detailed butterfly tattoo or a delicate moth and butterfly tattoo combination. Don't be afraid to ask for a consultation! This is where you can show them your ideas, discuss placement (thinking about a tattoo pain chart female might cross your mind for certain areas!), and clarify every single detail. They can even draw up a butterfly tattoo stencil or moth stencil for you to review before anything permanent happens. This way, you won't end up with a 'wrong tattoo' that's not quite what you expected. Take your time, communicate clearly, and enjoy the process of getting a piece of art that truly represents you!
