BEING A YOUNG TEACHER MEANS…

As most of you probably know by now (check my other posts) im a high school teacher!

I started when I was 21 and I’ll be 25 in October. I like that im still considered a “young” teacher but it does come with its own amount of setbacks.

Mainly I just get annoyed when older teachers think that I don’t know anything because im still considered “new”

I love how my humor is similar to my students, and I know as time goes on I won’t be able to understand their generation of humor haha so im enjoying it while I still can.

sometimes the kids over share though, especially when I DONT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT 😭

Could you be a teacher? Regardless of how I feel this is what I love to do 💟

Until next time:)~

... Read moreSince I shared my initial thoughts on being a young teacher, many of you have probably wondered, 'What are the concrete ways to navigate these challenges?' It’s true, starting your career early in education brings a unique set of experiences – some incredibly rewarding, and others that definitely test your patience! I’ve learned a few things over the past few years that I wish I knew when I first stepped into the classroom at 21. One of the biggest hurdles, as some of you might have gathered from my previous post or even experienced yourselves, is the perception of being 'too young.' I've definitely had moments where I was mistaken for a student, or had my decisions questioned more frequently than my older colleagues. It can be frustrating, but I’ve found a few strategies that genuinely help. First, dressing professionally really does make a difference. It helps establish a visual cue of authority and experience. Second, always be prepared and confident in your lesson plans. When you demonstrate your knowledge and control of the classroom, it speaks volumes. And third, build relationships with veteran teachers. Instead of feeling undermined, I started actively seeking advice and collaborating. Their experience is invaluable, and showing respect for their wisdom often leads to them reciprocating that respect for your fresh perspective. Another unique aspect is the student connection. As I mentioned, understanding their humor is a huge plus! But sometimes, that close connection can lead to boundaries blurring, especially when students overshare. It’s a delicate balance. I've learned that it's okay to be approachable and friendly, but crucial to maintain a professional distance. If a student starts to overshare or discusses something inappropriate for a teacher-student relationship, I gently redirect the conversation back to academics or refer them to the school counselor or another trusted adult. It’s about teaching them healthy boundaries while still showing you care. The 'good' truly outweighs the 'bad' for me. The energy I bring, my ability to relate to current pop culture (even if it's fleeting!), and my genuine enthusiasm often translates into a more dynamic and engaging classroom environment. I’ve noticed students are more likely to open up to me about their struggles, not just academically but personally, which allows me to connect them with the right resources. This ability to be a trusted adult, without being 'too old' to understand their world, is incredibly fulfilling. For anyone considering a career as a young teacher, or those who are just starting out, here are a few practical tips I’ve picked up: Find your mentors: Don't try to do it all alone. Seek out experienced teachers who can guide you. Set clear boundaries: Both with students and with your work-life balance. Teaching can be consuming, so protect your personal time. Embrace professional development: Stay current with educational trends, new technologies, and teaching methodologies. This not only enhances your skills but also builds your credibility. Document everything: Student progress, parent communications, classroom incidents – it helps protect you and track growth. Celebrate the small victories: Teaching has its tough days, but remember the moments when a student finally 'gets it,' or when you see their confidence grow. Those are the moments that make it all worthwhile. Being a young teacher is a journey of continuous learning, self-discovery, and immense impact. While the challenges of being a new teacher are real, the rewards of shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning are truly unparalleled. It’s not just a job; it’s a passion, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

The image introduces the concept of distinguishing toddler independence from 'being difficult,' stating that most 'problem behavior' is healthy development in disguise. It sets the stage for understanding child development.
This image explains the science behind toddler independence, highlighting that autonomy development between ages 2-5 is a biological drive. It notes that resisting help and saying 'no' are signs of healthy development, per Erikson's theory.
This image describes behavior #1, 'I do it MYSELF!' refusing help. It explains this as building competence and self-efficacy, suggesting parents offer choices like 'Want me to help or watch?' to support confidence.
Toddler Defiance or Healthy Independence?
Before you label it “defiance” — pause. ⏱️ “I do it MYSELF.” Saying no to everything. Changing their mind three times in 30 seconds. Ignoring you completely. These behaviors feel exhausting and disrespectful. But most of the time? They’re not defiance at all. They’re independence showing up. 🌱
