make 50% commission to tuition agency makes sense

Can we discuss how some tuition agencies are actually moving mad recently? 💀

ive indicated my interest for a tuition assignment recently as this student stays near to my existing students, and taking this new student up via a tuition agency may help in my logistic planning.

I’m trying to be professional, but the vibes with the agency is honestly off.

Here’s the tea on my most recent experiences. Dealing with them is surely an extreme sport:

🚩 The "Mystery Box" Student

They want me to commit to a student but provide ZERO info. Current grades? Ghost. Homework habits? Ghost. Learning style? Ghost. Any assessment book? Ghost.

But when I ask for details, suddenly I’m the one being difficult? Bestie, I can’t help the kid if I don’t know what I’m working with.

🚩 The Reply Speed Whiplash

Me: "Hi, just checking on the student's current challenges ..."

Agency: Silence for 5 business days 🦗

Me: "Okay, I might need to pass on this..."

Agency: (0.001 seconds later) "PLS ACCEPT THE ASSIGNMENT ASAP PARENT WAITING. I WILL RESEND TNC NOW."

The desperation only comes out when it’s time to lock me in. 🙄

🚩 The Double Standards (This one hurts)

Why is it that parents/students can cancel on us for "bad fit" (valid!), but if we realize it’s a mismatch, we get penalized or blacklisted? We’re independent contractors, not hostages. 🔒 Let us BOTH swipe left if the vibe isn’t right.

🚩 NOT transferring 50% of my first month pay

Why is it that I have to keep reaching out to the agency for an update on when they would do the transfer? They didn’t even asked me for my bank account number, until I asked for the timeline💀

Do they intend to stay silent until tutors ask for the payment?

I love teaching, but the admin side with these agencies is exhausting. They do the intro and then dip, while taking a fat commission. Make it make sense. 📉

Oh and to make it worst; the TNC indicated that tutors are not allowed to cancel on an assignment should there be a misfit, but parent would be able to do so 🤷‍♀️ what is this double standard behaviour?

Fellow tutors, am I tripping or is this universal? Tell me your worst agency horror story in the comments so I know I’m not alone. 👇

From my experience, agencies charging a 50% commission often fall short on communication and transparency, which can be incredibly frustrating. One key issue I’ve encountered repeatedly is the "Mystery Box" student scenario. Agencies expect tutors to commit without providing essential details like current grades, homework habits, or learning styles. This lack of information leaves tutors guessing and ill-prepared to tailor lessons effectively. It’s essential that agencies offer comprehensive profiles of students to allow tutors to assess compatibility and plan lessons responsibly. Response times are another critical pain point. Long silences followed by urgent demands to accept assignments disrupt tutors' schedules and add unnecessary pressure. A consistent and respectful communication approach from agencies would build trust and improve professional relationships. The double standards in cancellation policies are particularly disheartening. Tutors should have the freedom to decline or cancel assignments if there’s a poor fit, just as parents do. Treating tutors as independent contractors rather than binding them unfairly is vital for maintaining a healthy working environment. Payment delays and poor administration add further strain. Agencies needing repeated reminders to transfer tutors' earnings reflect poor management and disrespect for tutors’ time and effort. Payment systems need to be streamlined and timely for tutors to feel valued. From a logistical standpoint, working with an agency could ease travel arrangements by grouping students geographically. However, this benefit is negated if agencies don’t adequately support tutors with clear student info, fair terms, and prompt payment. Overall, the high commission charged by these agencies should correspond to professional service and support. Otherwise, tutors might be better off building direct relationships with families despite the initial convenience agencies provide. Fellow tutors, sharing your personal stories and strategies to handle difficult agencies can empower us all to advocate for better treatment and fairer practices.

when I did tuition long ago, the parents pay me directly from the 3rd week onwards.

Wa which company is this? I feel it’s harder to get assignments now because they prioritise ppl they like.
