👨‍🎤cultural parades lose turnout due to fear 😨

This year, despite everything going on politically and otherwise, I decided to attend a cultural parade event! The area I went to had a high population of Hispanic/Latino individuals but not a lot of great turnout.

Unfortunately, I think the presidential administration had something to do with the low turnout. ICE has been spotted in nearby areas. People have seen what happens when they show themselves out in the open.

It makes me sad that they are scared to celebrate their culture. I wish everyone had the freedom to express themselves in any way they see fit so long as it doesn’t harm others.

... Read moreAttending cultural parades is a powerful way to celebrate heritage and community spirit. However, in recent times, especially around the 2024 election period, many participants have reported a noticeable decline in attendance at such events. A significant factor contributing to this is the heightened anxiety and caution within Hispanic and Latino communities due to increased immigration enforcement activities in public spaces. ICE patrols near parade locations create an environment of fear that discourages open cultural expression. The presence of ICE agents and the political atmosphere under the current presidential administration have amplified concerns about potential immigration checks or detentions. This environment often leads families and individuals to avoid public gatherings that once were vibrant displays of cultural pride. While cultural parades traditionally offer joy, unity, and visibility, the fear of exposure and legal consequences has overshadowed these celebrations. Despite these challenges, it is important to recognize the community’s resilience and ongoing efforts to preserve culture. Many organizers are exploring alternative ways to celebrate safely, such as smaller private events or virtual gatherings. Advocating for policies that protect immigrants' rights and promote inclusion remains critical so that community members can freely express their identities without fear. Ultimately, cultural parades are not just about festivity—they symbolize the right to expression and belonging. Supporting and standing in solidarity with these communities can help ensure that future events see increased participation and that fear no longer silences this vibrant cultural narration.

Multiculturalism is a beautiful thing. I think it’s awesome that despite everything these performers came out and wanted to share their culture. People are so cruel.
