Renting is a SCAM!!😡

As I was growing up, year after year it seemed harder and harder to rent. Rent became almost as much as a mortgage, so it didn’t make sense to me ever to rent! 🙄

Even now, my mortgage isn’t much higher than people are paying rent in my area. 💸 Plus, landlords expect first and last month’s rent, and a security deposit before you can even move in. At that point you’re better off just saving for a down payment on a house! 🏠

What do you think? Is renting worth it or a total scam? 😧

... Read moreI completely resonate with the feeling that 'renting is a scam!!' It’s a sentiment that many of us, myself included, have felt deeply in our financial journeys. When you're constantly shelling out hard-earned cash month after month, only to see none of it contribute to your own equity, it can feel incredibly frustrating. For years, I watched my rent climb higher and higher, always wondering where all that money was really going. One of the biggest reasons renting feels like a financial trap is the sheer amount of money you pay that simply vanishes. Unlike a mortgage, where a portion of your payment chips away at the principal, building equity in an asset you own, rent payments offer no such return. It's truly like throwing money into a bottomless pit. I remember crunching the numbers and realizing that over several years, I had paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to a landlord, funds that could have easily gone towards a down payment or even paying off a significant chunk of my own home. And it’s not just the monthly rent. Think about all the upfront costs and hidden fees! Landlords often demand first and last month’s rent, plus a hefty security deposit. Then there are application fees, pet fees (if you have furry friends!), and sometimes even amenity fees. Moving itself is expensive, with truck rentals, packing supplies, and the sheer effort involved. All these costs add up quickly, making it incredibly difficult to save for something more permanent, like a down payment on your own place. It feels like you’re constantly bleeding money before you even get the keys. The lack of control and instability also contributes to the 'scam' feeling. As a renter, you're at the mercy of your landlord and the market. Rent hikes can happen unexpectedly, forcing you to either pay more or find a new place, which means more moving costs and disruption. You can't paint the walls, make significant improvements, or truly personalize your living space without permission. It’s hard to settle in and build a long-term home when you know your living situation could change with a 30-day notice. This constant uncertainty makes it feel less like a home and more like a temporary, expensive arrangement. While some might argue that renting offers flexibility – no maintenance worries, ability to move easily – I’ve come to realize that this flexibility often comes at a steep financial cost. Yes, you don't have to fix a leaky faucet, but you're paying a premium for that convenience, a premium that doesn’t contribute to your future wealth. For many, the perceived benefits of renting simply don’t outweigh the long-term financial drain, especially when you see how quickly those monthly payments would build equity in your own home. It truly makes you question if renting is ever worth it in the long run.

I’m happy renting. I pay my rent every month and someone else does the landscaping and maintenance. I do not want to have to pay to keep a house up. 😮‍💨
