Hey fellow bookworms! If your shelves look anything like mine used to – a beautiful mess, perhaps a bit of a cluttered bookshelf – then you know the struggle is real. I finally decided to tackle mine *this weekend*, and I'm so thrilled with the results! It wasn't just about making it look good; it was about creating a functional, inspiring space where I can easily find what I need.
My secret? A cube organization system. What I love about it is how each cube becomes its own mini-library. It’s super easy to implement and makes finding exactly what I’m looking for a breeze. Here’s how I approached it, and maybe these tips can help you transform your cluttered books too!
First, the big purge. Seriously, this step is crucial. I pulled everything off the shelves, dusted thoroughly (you’d be surprised!), and then sorted into piles: 'Keep,' 'Donate/Sell,' and 'Maybe.' Be honest with yourself! For my 'Keep' pile, I started thinking about categories. Instead of just genres, I got specific based on how I actually use my books and items.
For instance, I dedicated one cube to my TBR Shelf – these are the books I'm genuinely excited to read next. It's so satisfying to have them all in one spot, rather than scattered. Another cube became my dedicated Writing Books section, housing all my guides and references. I even have a special spot for my reference books for post-apocalyptic fiction, which includes fascinating reads on survival and historical medicine. It makes research so much easier when everything is grouped logically!
Then there's the fun stuff. My Art books and Coloring Books (with their accompanying markers!) each got their own home. It’s amazing how much more I use them now that they're easily accessible. I also have a 'Witch shelf' – complete with a binder, a special candle, and relevant books – which adds a really personal touch while staying organized. Don’t forget those practical items like Note books; mine have their own neat stack. And yes, even the 'Kids stuff' has a designated, easy-to-reach spot, avoiding chaos in other areas.
Now, about stacking books – do you *stack books horizontally or vertically*? I find a mix works best for both aesthetics and function. Most of my books are vertical, but I use horizontal stacks for oversized books that won’t fit upright, or to create visual breaks within a cube. For example, if I have a large book that doesn't fit, placing it horizontally on top of a stack of smaller books not only solves the height issue but also provides a stable base for decorative items or even another small stack. It’s a great way to maximize space and deal with those tricky, non-standard sizes.
When it comes to achieving that modern English books library shelves look, I focus on clean lines and intentional placement. My cube system naturally lends itself to this, creating a sense of order. I try to avoid overstuffing, leaving a little breathing room in each cube. This not only looks better but also makes it easier to pull out and return books. For some of my lower shelves, where my dog might get curious, I've even used random files to protect some items, which double as functional storage!
Maintaining this system is easier than you’d think. Every time I get a new book, I immediately decide which category it belongs in. And that desire to 'stop buying books'? Well, it’s a work in progress, but having an organized space definitely makes me more mindful of what I bring into my collection. Remember, your bookshelf is a reflection of you. Make it a space you love and that serves your reading habits!
