Book Review: Fearful by Lauren Roberts

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars

Ok so I have mixed thoughts on this one 👀

This novella follows Death and Kitt, but surprisingly also Blair and Lenny (gasp… I did NOT see that coming). The story takes place alongside books 2 and 3, so it was really interesting getting to see what Kitt was doing behind the scenes. There were so many moments in the main books where I wondered who he was talking to or why he seemed so sick and crazed, and this novella finally filled in some of those gaps.

I also enjoyed the breaks from Kitt’s storyline to watch Blair and Lenny slowly fall in love. Honestly, there were even moments where I thought Death and Kitt were falling for each other with all of their secret conversations and quiet moments together 👀

In the end, Kitt couldn’t escape Death, and he too was sent to collect souls. While I wouldn’t call this a must-read novella, it definitely feels like Lauren Roberts left the door open for more books in this series.

The real question is… will I read them? Honestly, I’m not sure. YA romance series can sometimes start to drag on for me, but I am curious where the story could go next.

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms! Since so many of you are curious about the characters in Lauren Roberts' 'Fearful' novella, especially Kitt, Death, Blair, and Lenny, I wanted to chat a bit more about them and what made this story so captivating for me. Let's start with Kitt. In the main series, he's always been this enigmatic figure, right? We see glimpses of his struggles and that intense connection with Death, but 'Fearful' really pulls back the curtain. I loved finally understanding why he seemed so unwell and often crazed. It clarified so many of his actions in books 2 and 3. His internal conflict, caught between his duty and something else... it's just heartbreaking. And Death! Their dynamic was far more complex than I initially imagined. Those 'secret conversations and quiet moments' the original review mentioned? They weren't just filler; they were vital to understanding their twisted, undeniable bond. It felt like a slow burn with incredibly high stakes, making me question if there was more than just a master-servant relationship brewing. The novella truly peeled back layers on Death's true intentions and Kitt's forced path to collecting souls. Now, for the unexpected stars of the show: Blair and Lenny! Honestly, when they first appeared, I was completely caught off guard. Yet, their storyline was such a delightful surprise and a much-needed breath of fresh air amidst the darker themes involving Kitt. Watching them 'slowly fall in love' was genuinely charming. Their romance provided a beautiful counterpoint, showing a different kind of connection forming in this harsh world. It wasn't just a side plot; it felt integral, offering a glimpse of hope and genuine affection. I found myself rooting for them, perhaps even more so because their journey felt less burdened by the overarching series' doom and gloom. Their scenes felt like a quiet haven, and it was fascinating to observe how their story unfolded alongside the main events we already knew. What I appreciate most about how Lauren Roberts wove this novella into her #1 New York Times Bestselling Series is how it retroactively enriches the experience of books 2 and 3. Suddenly, moments that felt ambiguous or confusing in the main story make perfect sense. It's like finding the missing pieces of a puzzle. The deeper understanding of Kitt's plight and the subtle nuances of his interactions, especially with Death, add so much emotional weight. And the key on the cover, wrapped in that pink ribbon – it symbolically represents the unlocking of secrets and perhaps even the ties that bind characters like Blair and Lenny. This novella isn't just an add-on; it's an essential character study that enhances the entire 'Fearful' universe. It genuinely left me pondering the future of all these captivating characters. So, while the main review had 'mixed thoughts,' for me, delving deeper into the motivations of Kitt, the complexities of Death, and the sweet, unexpected romance of Blair and Lenny truly elevated my appreciation for this world. It’s a testament to Roberts’ writing that even a novella can provide such profound insights into her unforgettable cast. If you're a fan of the series and curious about what really drives these characters, this deep dive is definitely worth your time.
