Part 1……

The red tally light snapped on.

“Good evening, I’m Renae Walker, and this is Channel 7 Breaking News—” she began, voice crisp, polished, the way she’d practiced a thousand times.

But then the screen to her left flickered, switching to a newly received photo from the police. A man’s face. One she knew better than anyone. One she thought she had erased from her life years ago.

Elias Porter.

Her ex.

A chill sliced through her mid-sentence. She felt it before she even registered what she was looking at. That unmistakable jawline. The scar near his brow. That crooked smirk—even frozen in a mugshot, she could see it.

“—suspect linked to the murder of—” Her breath caught. She blinked hard.

The newsroom behind the cameras shifted, a few heads rising. The teleprompter continued scrolling, but her mind stopped cold.

Elias. Wanted. Several states. Multiple homicides. Women.

Her throat tightened. She swallowed, but her voice refused to come.

“Cut—cut!” one of the producers hissed. The camera light snapped off.

Renae sat frozen, fingers trembling just slightly against the desk. The photo was still on the studio monitor, staring her down. The man she once loved. The man she once confessed she feared.

“Renae…?” the floor manager whispered carefully as he approached. “Are you okay?”

She didn’t answer. She couldn’t.

Because in that moment—staring at a killer’s face displayed in high definition—she wasn’t seeing the suspect.

She was seeing the nights he’d shown up unannounced. The arguments that didn’t feel like arguments until later. The way she felt watched long after the relationship ended.

And she realized something else—something far worse than what was on the screen.

If he was killing women…

…was she supposed to be next?

The police didn’t even wait for her to gather herself.

The moment the broadcast cut, two detectives were already pushing through the studio doors, badges flashing, expressions grim. Renae hadn’t even stood from the anchor desk yet. She was still staring at the studio monitor, at Elias’s face, feeling her pulse beat in her ears.

“Ms. Walker?” Detective Hale, a tall woman with a clipped tone, stepped forward. “We need you to come with us.”

Renae blinked. “I—I haven’t done anything.”

“This isn’t about you being in trouble,” the detective said. “This is about keeping you alive.”

Those words stole the air from her lungs.

Alive.

Another detective, Ramirez, gently guided her up from the chair. “Your ex, Elias Porter—we have credible reason to believe you may be a target.”

Renae stiffened. “Why would I—why would he—”

“He’s escalated,” Hale said. “The last three victims? All women he had past contact with. Old coworkers. A former neighbor. A girl he dated for six weeks in college.”

Renae’s knees wobbled.

She had dated Elias for seven years.

“Your station manager already approved us taking you,” Ramirez went on, lowering his voice. “We need to move now. Before this goes public and he realizes you saw the alert on-air.”

Before he realizes she’s still alive.

Before he decides to fix that.

Renae exhaled shakily. “Can’t I at least get my things? My phone?”

“No,” Hale said firmly. “Phone stays off. No personal belongings. No digital trail. If Elias is watching—and we think he is—any movement you make is a risk.”

They escorted her out of the brightly lit studio into the cold corridor behind it. Every step felt surreal. Her coworkers stared as she passed, some whispering, some watching her with wide, sympathetic eyes.

At the back exit, an unmarked black SUV waited.

Ramirez opened the door. “Ms. Walker. Please.”

Renae paused, heartbeat trembling.

This wasn’t a news story anymore.

She was no longer the reporter delivering the headline.

She was the headline.

She slid into the back seat. The locks clicked automatically once the door shut. Hale climbed in beside her, Ramirez in the front.

As the SUV pulled off, leaving the newsroom behind, Renae pressed her forehead to the window, eyes burning.

“Where are you taking me?” she asked.

“A safehouse,” Hale replied. “Isolated. Off the grid.”

“And how long will I be there?”

Ramirez answered quietly.

“Until we catch him.”

Renae’s stomach dropped.

Because in her gut, she knew—

Elias wasn’t running.

Elias was hunting.

The safehouse basement was cold, almost clinically so. A single metal table. Two chairs. A buzzing ceiling light that flickered every few seconds like it was struggling to stay alive.

Renae sat wrapped in a government-issued sweatshirt, hands clasped so tightly she could feel her knuckles pulse. She wasn’t under arrest, but it felt like she was being interrogated for a crime she somehow survived.

Detective Hale placed a recorder on the table.

“This is voluntary,” she reminded her. “But the more you tell us, the better chance we have of staying ahead of him.”

Renae nodded weakly.

Ramirez sat on the opposite side, flipping open his notebook. “We need to ask about your past with Elias. Anything you remember, even if it doesn’t feel important.”

She looked down. “Most of it doesn’t feel real anymore.”

“That’s usually how trauma works,” Hale said gently.

They waited.

Renae inhaled slowly, then forced her voice steady. “We started dating my last year of college. He was charming. Funny. He always made me feel like I was the only person he saw in a room.” She shook her head. “But he changed when we moved in together.”

Ramirez leaned forward. “Changed how?”

She hesitated. This was the part she never said out loud. Not to friends. Not to family. Not even to herself if she could help it.

“He monitored everything,” she finally whispered. “What I wore. Who I talked to. How long I took at the grocery store. He said it was because he ‘worried about me.’” Her eyes glazed as memories flooded in. “And I… I believed him. Until I didn’t.”

“What made you start questioning it?” Hale asked.

“His temper.” Renae’s throat tightened. “Not hitting me. Not like that. But he’d—he’d get this look. Like he wasn’t seeing me anymore. Like I was someone else. Something else. A problem he needed to solve.”

Ramirez’s pen paused mid-scratch.

“He ever make threats?” he asked.

She hesitated again—this time longer.

“…yes.”

Hale exchanged a glance with Ramirez. “Renae, we need specifics.”

She swallowed. “He told me once… if I ever left him, he wouldn’t know how to live without me.” She wiped at her eye. “He said if he couldn’t have me, then no one would.” Her voice cracked. “I thought he was being dramatic. I thought people said things like that when they were scared.”

“What made you leave?” Hale asked softly.

Renae went silent.

Because this was the one thing she had buried so deeply she barely admitted it to herself.

Finally, after a long, shaking breath:

“There was a woman,” she whispered. “A coworker of his. She—I don’t know how to say this—she warned me.”

Ramirez’s brow lifted. “Warned you how?”

“She pulled me aside one afternoon,” Renae said. “Told me to be careful. Told me she’d dated him before me. That he was obsessed. Possessive. That he hurt her dog and called it an accident.”

Hale stiffened. “Do you remember her name?”

Renae nodded slowly.

But then her expression collapsed.

“She’s one of the victims, isn’t she?”

The detectives didn’t answer. They didn’t have to.

Renae’s eyes filled, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I left him the next week. I thought I escaped. I thought that was it.”

Ramirez closed his notebook. “You did everything you could. What’s happening now—this isn’t your fault.”

But Renae shook her head.

Because in her mind, she was replaying all the little moments. The clinginess. The warnings she ignored. The look in his eyes the last night they spoke.

The way he said her name like it was something he owned.

“I should’ve told someone,” she whispered. “I should’ve reported him. Maybe those women would still be—”

Hale leaned forward, voice firm, not unkind. “The person responsible is Elias. Not you. But from what you’ve told us…” She exhaled. “You were the one that got away. He won’t stop. Not until we stop him first.”

Renae felt her stomach turn.

Because she could feel it too.

Somewhere out there, Elias was thinking of her.

Remembering her.

Hunting her.

... Read moreThis gripping narrative highlights the emotional turmoil faced by survivors of abusive relationships and the profound impact such trauma can have on their lives. Elias Porter's transition from a charming partner to a possessive and threatening individual mirrors real-life cases where abusers escalate to dangerous behaviors if unchecked. The story sheds light on the importance of recognizing early warning signs of obsession and control, such as monitoring a partner’s movements, isolating them from friends and family, and issuing veiled or direct threats. Experts in domestic violence emphasize that survivors often feel guilt and regret for not reporting abusive behaviors sooner, yet it is never their fault. The psychological effects of such relationships can cause trauma responses including memory suppression and emotional numbness, which Renae's character poignantly reveals when she states that much of the past doesn’t feel real anymore. Support systems, including law enforcement and safehouses, play a crucial role in protecting victims when threats escalate to physical violence. In the context of Renae's story, the intervention by detectives and the provision of an off-the-grid safehouse symbolize necessary steps for victim protection when a suspect is a dangerous fugitive. The immediate confiscation of personal items and the careful avoidance of digital footprints are increasingly common protective measures, especially when perpetrators use technology to track or intimidate victims. This narrative also underlines the ripple effect of violence on communities. Elias’s previous victims, including coworkers and neighbors, reflect how abusive patterns often repeat, impacting multiple lives before intervention. Awareness campaigns and educational efforts about abusive behavior patterns could potentially save lives by encouraging individuals to recognize signs and seek help early. For readers and survivors alike, Renae’s story serves as both a cautionary tale and a message of hope: escape is possible, and support is available. Building awareness around the dynamics of obsession, control, and stalking behaviors is vital in fighting domestic violence and protecting vulnerable individuals from becoming future victims.
