Expect The Unexpected… part 1

Arielle froze, her eye still pressed to the peephole as if she were glued there.

Elijah.

He stood with his hands in his pockets, rocking on his heels the same way he used to whenever he rehearsed a lie. Same posture. Same soft, calculated expression. A ghost from an old life that she’d finally started to unpack and fold away.

Her throat tightened.

She hadn’t spoken to him in years. Not in any real way. Not since the breakup, not since the silent distance that followed, not since his mother kept popping up in her inbox with messages like:

“Just checking on you.”

“You were always good for him.”

“Let me know if you ever need anything.”

At first it seemed sweet. Then… strange. Then suffocating.

And now here he was.

At her new place.

A place she hadn’t given to anyone except the leasing office and utilities.

Her heartbeat hammered. She sent him. She really sent him.

Arielle backed away from the door, careful not to make the floorboards creak. She didn’t want him to think she was home. She didn’t want him to hear the panic in her breath. The knock came again—firm this time, like he was done pretending to be patient.

“Arielle,” Elijah called softly. Too softly. Almost rehearsed. “I know you’re there.”

She squeezed her eyes shut.

Of course he knew. His mother always knew. She kept tabs on Arielle in ways Arielle never understood—people claiming they “ran into” Elijah’s mother at the supermarket near Arielle’s job, or mentioning she’d asked if Arielle was dating anyone new. It was like the woman had never let her go.

The knocking stopped.

A moment of silence stretched thin.

Then Elijah said something that chilled her straight to her bones.

“My mom told me you’d be scared.” A beat. “She said you always run.”

Arielle’s breath caught in her throat.

What did that even mean? Why was his mother still watching her? Still pulling strings? Still talking about her like she had a claim?

She took one step backward. Then another.

But then—

Movement.

A shadow under the door.

He lowered his head, as if trying to see through the crack.

“Arielle… it’s important.”

That made it worse. Everything with him was “important” when he wanted access. And everything with his mother was “urgent” when she was trying to reel Arielle back into a dynamic she’d fought tooth and nail to escape.

“Just open the door,” he murmured. “Please.”

But that tone—

That wasn’t a plea.

That was expectation wrapped in softness.

Her pulse slammed in her ears.

She wasn’t the same woman she was back then. She wasn’t weak. She wasn’t naïve. She wasn’t—

A loud bang shook the door.

“Arielle.”

Not soft now.

Not gentle.

Just her name—sharp, impatient, almost… offended.

The realization hit her like cold water:

He didn’t come to check on her.

He came because he thought he had the right.

And his mother had sent him because she still believed Arielle belonged to their family—whether or not Arielle agreed.

Arielle’s hands trembled as she reached for her phone.

She had three choices:

1. Call the police

2. Call someone she trusted

3. Or open that door and face the past she never wanted to see again

And Elijah, standing there like a shadow resurrected, knocked one last time—slow, deliberate.

“Arielle… open up. We need to talk.”

Arielle inhaled shakily, hand still curled around her phone. Something in her—fear, defiance, exhaustion—finally pushed her forward. She unlatched the lock. The sound felt too loud in the quiet hallway.

Elijah straightened the moment he heard it.

When she cracked the door open just an inch, he didn’t try to push it. He just stood there, watching her with a look she couldn’t read—somewhere between relief and possession.

“Ari,” he breathed, like the nickname hadn’t expired years ago. “I was worried you wouldn’t talk to me.”

“I wasn’t planning on it,” she said, voice stiff. “Why are you here?”

He swallowed. His gaze didn’t leave her face—didn’t blink, didn’t soften, didn’t break. It was the same stare he used to give her when he was trying to keep her from pulling away during arguments.

“I came because my mom said you needed me.”

Arielle blinked. “Needed you? Elijah, I didn’t—”

“She said you weren’t doing well,” he said, stepping forward just slightly. Arielle tightened her hold on the door. “She said you’ve been having trouble sleeping. Stress. Panic. She felt it.”

Felt it?

Arielle’s stomach dropped.

“Elijah,” she said slowly, “I haven’t spoken to your mother in almost a year. How would she know anything about me?”

He smiled—just a small, eerie curl at the corner of his mouth.

“She notices things about you. She always has. Even when you think she isn’t looking.”

Arielle felt the air leave her chest.

“Elijah… what does that mean?”

He exhaled, dragging a hand through his hair, frustrated—not at the situation, but at her confusion, as if she was the one being unreasonable.

“It means,” he said softly, “that she cares. That we both care. More than you realize.” He paused, leaning forward just enough that his shadow spilled into her apartment. “She told me you’d run again if I didn’t come now. She said you were slipping away.”

Arielle’s pulse hammered.

“Elijah, I moved. That’s it. People move.”

“You moved without telling anyone,” he corrected quietly. “Not even her. After everything she’s done for you.”

Arielle’s skin prickled.

Everything she’s done?

She pushed the door another inch closed, but Elijah noticed immediately. His hand raised—not aggressively, just placed flat against the edge of the door, stopping it with unsettling gentleness.

“Ari,” he said, his voice dipping lower, “don’t do that.”

She stiffened.

His eyes locked onto hers, unblinking. Steady. Too steady.

“I’m here because she asked me to check on you,” he said. “Because she felt something was wrong. And she’s never wrong about you.”

The silence after that felt thick enough to choke on.

Arielle whispered, “Elijah… what does your mother want with me?”

And Elijah’s expression changed—barely, but enough.

A flicker. A tightening of the jaw. A warmth that felt wrong.

“She wants you to come back,” he said. “To us.”

Arielle’s fingers tightened around the door.

“Elijah… we aren’t together.”

He tilted his head.

“You left,” he said, “but she never let you go.”

He took a breath, and his voice dropped even lower.

“She says your energy still belongs with ours.”

A cold shiver slid down Arielle’s spine.

And Elijah, so calm it frightened her, added:

“She said if I didn’t bring you home… she would.”

... Read moreThis story captures a compelling moment of psychological suspense, focusing on Arielle's struggle to reclaim her life from the lingering presence of an old relationship and intrusive family ties. Characters like Elijah and his mother embody the unsettling aspects of control and manipulation, which many readers find thrilling and emotionally resonant. The tension builds as Arielle confronts multiple fears—fear of intrusion, fear of the past, and the challenge of setting boundaries. Real-life experiences often mirror these emotions when people attempt to escape toxic relationships or overbearing family dynamics. This narrative shines a light on how difficult it can be to fully detach from such influences, especially when the past continues to cling through unexpected encounters. In storytelling and personal growth alike, recognizing these patterns of control is crucial for moving forward. Arielle’s hesitation and fear alongside her defiance reflect an authentic human response to uncertainty and emotional manipulation. Such stories emphasize the importance of personal strength, clear boundaries, and support systems — whether calling trusted friends or authorities when feeling unsafe. Readers interested in psychological dramas, relationship complexities, and suspenseful storytelling will find 'Expect The Unexpected' a relatable and captivating read. The inclusion of everyday fears and choices expands the story’s relevance beyond fiction, inviting reflection on how past relationships and family ties might impact one’s current life. Ultimately, this is more than just a suspenseful encounter; it’s a narrative about reclaiming personal autonomy against the odds. As this is only part one, readers are encouraged to anticipate deeper developments that will explore the dynamics between Arielle, Elijah, and his mother, and to consider how unresolved issues from the past often surface when least expected.
