Trey left Theodore standing where he was, the apology still hanging in the air like smoke that refused to clear. He didn’t look back. He never did when something was already dead to him.

The cult didn’t surprise him. Theodore had always needed something bigger than himself to kneel to—rules, leaders, causes. Elliot had just been another altar. What mattered was silence. And Theodore had promised it, voice shaking, eyes wet, swearing loyalty far too late.

Trey drove home with the radio off.

The quiet gave his thoughts too much room. Elliot’s face crept in anyway—blood, panic, the sound that never quite left Trey’s ears. He tightened his grip on the steering wheel until his knuckles ached. Consequences. He meant every word of it.

When he turned onto his street, the houses blurred past, familiar and hollow. He pulled into his driveway, killed the engine, and sat there for a beat longer than necessary. The porch light was off. The night felt wrong—too still.

Then he saw her.

She stood near the front steps, half in shadow, half in the spill of the streetlight. Anjelys. Hair pulled back, arms folded tight against herself like she was holding something together that threatened to split open. She looked thinner. Sharper. Like life had carved away the softness and left only edges.

Trey’s chest tightened before his mind caught up.

He got out of the car slowly, eyes never leaving her. “What are you doing here?” he asked, voice low, controlled. No warmth. No welcome.

She swallowed. “I needed to see you.”

“That was a mistake.” He shut the car door harder than necessary. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“I know,” she said quickly. “But I didn’t know where else to go.”

That did something to him. He hated that it did.

He laughed once, humorless. “You always knew exactly where to go. Just never to me.”

Her jaw trembled, but she held his gaze. “I heard things, Trey.”

His body went still.

“What things?” he asked.

She took a step closer. “About Elliot. About Theodore. About you.”

The air thickened. Every instinct in him screamed danger. Not loud, not frantic—cold and precise. He closed the distance between them in two strides, stopping just short enough to not touch her.

“You need to be very careful with what you think you know,” he said quietly.

Her eyes searched his face, as if trying to find the man she once loved buried beneath the hardness. “Did you do it?” she whispered.

The question hit like a blade slipping between ribs—not because it hurt, but because it went straight in.

Trey stared at her for a long moment, then leaned in just enough for her to feel his breath.

“There are some questions,” he said softly, “that don’t get answers. Only endings.”

Anjelys’ breath caught.

And in that moment, Trey knew—whatever had brought her back, whatever she thought she wanted—it was already too late.

Trey’s mouth twisted as he looked her over, the ring catching the streetlight like a quiet accusation.

“So what,” he said flatly, eyes dropping to her hand, “your husband know you’re standing in my driveway at night?”

Anjelys stiffened. “This isn’t about me being married, Trey. I know I made a mistake. I can’t fix that. But just because I—”

“Stop.” His voice cut through her words like glass. “Don’t do that.”

She frowned, confused. “Don’t do what?”

“Don’t come here pretending this is about regret or closure or whatever story you rehearsed on the way over.” His jaw tightened. “You don’t get to explain yourself to me.”

Her eyes shined, but she stood her ground. “You don’t understand—”

“I understand enough.” His tone sharpened, the restraint he’d been holding onto finally snapping. “You married someone else. You chose someone else. And now you’re here like that didn’t happen.”

“That’s not fair,” she said, voice breaking. “You’re not even letting me—”

“Get the fuck out of here, Anjelys.”

The words landed hard. Ugly. Final.

She froze, blinking once… then again, like her mind was trying to catch up to what her ears had just heard. She had never heard him speak to her like that. Not once. Not even at their worst.

“Trey…” she whispered.

He didn’t answer. The anger rushed through him fast and hot, fueled by betrayal, by Elliot, by Theodore, by everything he’d buried instead of dealt with. He turned away from her, stormed up the steps, and unlocked the door with shaking hands.

The door slammed behind him.

Anjelys stood alone in the driveway, the silence roaring in her ears, the house dark again—like she had never been there at all.
