Monologue:Toxic Mother

ou always say you’re protecting me.

Like danger has my name carved into it and you’re the only one who can see it coming.

You put on your cape, stand at the door, block the world with your body,

and call it love.

But rescue me from what?

From happiness?

From being chosen gently?

From a relationship that doesn’t bruise my spirit or ask me to disappear?

You talk about the unthinkable as if it lives in every person who gets close to me.

As if love itself is a trap.

As if I’m too fragile to recognize safety when I finally find it.

You never trusted the world with me—

but you also never trusted me.

We never had the kind of relationship where I could breathe without asking permission.

Every step forward felt like betrayal.

Every boundary I drew became proof, in your eyes, that I was slipping away.

You confuse control with care.

Isolation with protection.

Fear with wisdom.

I understand you’re scared.

I understand something hurt you so deeply that you decided nothing could ever touch me—

but in doing that, you touched me the hardest.

You don’t see that keeping me locked away doesn’t save me.

It teaches me to doubt myself.

It teaches me to feel guilty for wanting more than survival.

I’m not asking you to stop loving me.

I’m asking you to stop loving me like the world is always ending.

I am not a disaster waiting to happen.

I am not a child you need to rescue forever.

I am standing in something healthy, something real, something calm—

and for once, I’m not afraid.

So if you’re going to wear a cape,

let it be the kind that teaches me how to fly—

not the kind that keeps me grounded out of fear.
