Regret in your tears part 2
Kiyanne frantically was looking around for her boyfriend. His teammates had asked her where he was and if he had forgotten there was a game today. Kiyanne stated, “ I am just as confused as yall. I have no idea where he is. He is not answering my calls or text”. The coach had texted and called Dante. Nothing.
Kiyanne left the gym, nervous and scared. At this point, something could’ve happened where he might’ve been abducted. Or even worse. The hospital. She could only assume at this point. Dante wasn’t making it easy for anybody. His best friend Austin even called.
“This ain’t even like him for real”, Austin said to the others.
“We need him bro, if he’s not here we are fucked for tonight”, one teammate said.
“Does anybody know where they last saw Dante”? The coach asked nervously but stern. Everyone looked just as clueless as him. They all said murmured different answers.
“Did you ask Kiyanne where Dante was”? Austin asked.
“No. Does she know”? Austin shrugged his shoulders.
“Probably not. He hasn’t been in contact with her since yesterday”.
Coach had stepped out to take a call. The clock on the wall ticked louder than it should’ve.
“Check his phone?” Jordan said. “Maybe he left it.”
Austin pushed off the bench. “I’ll look.”
He didn’t know what he was expecting—maybe forgotten headphones, maybe a cracked screen lighting up with missed calls. Something normal. Something explainable.
What he found made his stomach drop.
Dante’s bag was open.
Not rummaged through. Not messy. Just… deliberately open, like Dante had meant to come back to it.
Austin reached inside and froze.
At the top was Dante’s jersey.
Folded.
Not crumpled. Not tossed. Folded the way you do when you’re done with something. When you’re saying this is it.
Austin swallowed hard and dug deeper.
Wallet. Keys.
Still there.
“Yo,” Malik said slowly, noticing Austin hadn’t moved. “What is it?”
Austin pulled out the folded piece of paper tucked beneath the jersey. His hands were shaking now. He didn’t open it right away—he didn’t want to be the one to make it real.
But then he saw his name.
Written in Dante’s handwriting.
Austin.
The room felt like it tilted.
“What did you find?” Jordan pressed.
Austin finally unfolded the paper, eyes scanning too fast, heart pounding so loud he was sure everyone could hear it.
I’m sorry. I just needed quiet for once.
That was it. No time stamp. No explanation. No joke at the end to soften it.
Austin’s breath caught. “This isn’t right,” he said, voice cracking despite himself. “This isn’t… him.”
Malik stepped closer, peering over his shoulder. “That’s all it says?”
Austin nodded.
The door creaked open then—Coach reentering, clipboard under his arm, smile halfway formed.
It vanished the second he saw their faces.
“Where’s Dante?” Coach asked.
Austin looked back at the locker. At the folded jersey. At the empty space where Dante should’ve been lacing up, ready to lead them out.
“I think,” Austin said quietly, gripping the note like it might disappear, “we need to find him. Right now.”.
The moment Austin pulled out that folded note, the air in the locker room just thickened. It wasn't just a missing player anymore; it was something far more personal, far more unsettling. Kiyanne must have been absolutely distraught, her fear turning into a gnawing uncertainty. A missing partner isn't just an inconvenience; it's a gaping hole of worry and unanswered questions that can consume you. I can only imagine the whirlwind of emotions going through Kiyanne’s mind. One minute, she’s looking for her boyfriend for a game, the next, he's gone, leaving behind a message that offers no real explanation. Does she feel a pang of *regret*? Regret for not noticing something was wrong, for not pushing harder, for not being able to read between the lines of their last conversation? It's a heavy burden, that feeling of 'if only I had known.' The image of a reflection, perhaps of a happy couple, in an eye, as mentioned in the OCR, really emphasizes the painful contrast to her current reality. And Austin, his best friend, finding that note... it must have been a punch to the gut. "I just needed quiet for once." What does that even mean? Is Dante overwhelmed, burned out, or is there something deeper, darker, that led him to disappear like this? That phrase alone carries so much weight, suggesting a struggle that Dante was keeping hidden. Austin's likely grappling with his own *emotional reflection*, wondering if he missed any signs, any subtle cries for help from his friend. The trust between best friends is profound, and to have one vanish without a proper goodbye, leaving only a cryptic message, can breed a profound sense of helplessness and even betrayal. This isn't just about a basketball game; it's about the sudden, unexplained absence of someone important, and the ripple effect it has on everyone who cares about him. The team’s worries about the game quickly turn into genuine concern for Dante's well-being. This whole situation is ripe for regret in many forms: Dante might regret the pain he's causing, Kiyanne might regret not understanding him better, and Austin might regret not reaching out more. It’s the kind of story that makes you wonder about the hidden struggles people face and the quiet battles fought internally, often unseen until it's too late. What happens now? The search isn't just physical; it's an emotional quest to understand and to heal. It’s moments like these that truly test the strength of relationships and force an emotional reflection on what truly matters. The tears that might flow are not just of sadness, but perhaps of anger, frustration, and that deep-seated regret that often accompanies the unknown when a loved one disappears.
